Yes Recruitment Type: Open to All Applicants Department: Building Safety Position Description: Under supervision, this position performs a variety of inspections of building and properties to ensure compliance with City of Amarillo Municipal Code, which may include plumbing, mechanical, electrical, irrigation, nuisance complaints, zoning violations, substandard structures, weeds and uncultivated growth, junk and debris, junk vehicles, building code requirements, mobile homes, mobile home and travel trailer parks, and inspection of existing residences for FHA loan program. No supervision of others. -Performs inspections on residential and commercial buildings, mobile homes and signs, investigating complaints to ensure compliance to the City of Amarillo's Municipal Code. -Performs graffiti, junk, and debris inspections. -Performs inspections and duties relating to the Junk Vehicle program. -Performs field inspections for compliance with City Ordinances as needed. -Inspects substandard structures and properties, preparing comprehensive reports and providing documentation and notification to property owners. -Performs inspections of existing houses to ascertain compliance with housing standards for qualifications under the Federal Housing Administration program. -Reviews construction documents to verify compliance with applicable City Ordinances and issuance of permits. -Prepares reports for presentation to City Council for condemnation procedures. -Provides information to the public regarding the requirements and policies of the City. -Coordinate with other agencies and contractors, monitoring condemnation and demolition process. -Assists in the drafting and publication of handbooks and standard operating procedures for the department. -Provides documentation of inspections, research property and inspection history utilizing necessary software and equipment. -Collaborates with the other inspectors, departments, agencies as required to ensure compliance with codes. -Investigates, interprets, and issues zoning violation notices as necessary. -May be required to file suits, prepare cases, and testify in Municipal Court. -Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year of experience in public relations or high public contact. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Must obtain the ICC Residential Building Inspector and International Energy Conservation Code certifications within one year of employment. Additional Requirements: -Ability to operate highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD. -Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing and use of small office equipment. -Knowledge of construction standards. -Basic knowledge of typing, drafting and mathematical skills. -Ability to withstand rigors of motivating various hazards to include in and around construction sites through all weather conditions and maintain acute sensory perceptions of surrounding environment to perform inspections. -Must be able to ascend or descend ladders, etc. -Must have strong written and verbal skills necessary to understand and communicate technical requirements to the public.
