    Research & Development Co-op Overview:

    J&J R&D encompasses the development of sophisticated materials, process improvements, risk management and mechanical testing through the development process across all sectors including Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Consumer and Corporate/Enterprise.

    We offer a fast-paced cross-functional, technologically advanced, corporate environment, passionate about developing individual engineering and scientific skills. You will have the opportunity to learn about anatomy, disease states, deformities and the surgical procedure/products used to address these conditions.

    Life as an R &D Co-op:

    The R&D Co-op program provides each student with real-life hands-on experience, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people from various schools throughout the country. Each Co-op will be assigned to a single function with a specific project for the 6-month term.

    The typical Co-op term is from June 2025 - December 2025.

    Responsibilities:

    The TDS-API Process Development organization is seeking a candidate interested in Gene Therapy process development. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors are the primary gene therapy platform for a variety of human diseases. Process development of AAV-based gene therapies is largely challenged by purification and analytics, slowing down overall turnaround and timelines. In this role, the Co-Op will be responsible for.

    • Managing project involving the implementation of a new analytical technology to better automate and control purification processes.
    • Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.
    • Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
    • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.
    • Provide other project support as needed.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • Biology, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and related majors are preferred.
    • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of a co-op assignment pursuing a Bachelor’s or equivalent experience, Master’s, or PhD degree or equivalent experience. For students pursuing their Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, Juniors or - Seniors are preferred.
    • Minimum GPA of 2.8 is required.
    • Completion of Undergraduate Freshmen year at an accredited University is required.

    Experience and Skills Required:

    • Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
    • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills is required.
    • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills are preferred.
    • Ability to balance multiple projects and initiatives while performing results.
    • Must be a self-starter works independently while supplying to the team goals.
    • Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities is desired.

    Preferred:

    • Students with basic laboratory skills and experience in research, experimental design & execution, and data analysis preferred.
    • Experience with lab scale purification techniques such as chromatography and filtration.
