GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Clinical Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor, the Safety Aide is responsible for sitting with a patient while in bed or wheelchair and alerting professional personnel if the patient should attempt to get out of bed or wheelchair or pursue an activity that could be possibly dangerous to the patient. A Safety Aide may also be assigned to view the monitors and alert staff should a patient need attention or assistance.
The Safety Aide must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the populations served by the hospital.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF JOB:
Responsible for alerting nursing staff should a patient attempt to get out of bed or pursue an activity that could be possibly dangerous to the patient. This responsibility will occur if the Safety Aide is viewing the monitors from the Nurse’s Station or if they are assigned to provide supervision and monitoring for one patient. Ensure patient safety by taking necessary steps to prevent a patient from falling or otherwise harming himself/herself. When the patient is in therapy or family is permitted to visit with the patient alone the safety sitter will observe the patient monitors on the Brain Injury Unit, make beds, straighten patient rooms, refill water pitchers and do simple clerical tasks as assigned by the Unit Manager/Nursing Supervisor.
