    Job Description

    SUMMARY:

    Functioning within the guidelines of the Maryland State Nurse Practice Act, the Licensed Practical Nurse practices under the direction of a Registered Nurse. In a team relationship, the Licensed Practical Nurse contributes to the nursing process, which includes the following elements of patient care: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. The Licensed Practical Nurse is at minimum, a competent practitioner who organizes and implements safe, therapeutic and efficient patient care in a controlled setting for a group of patients with predictable outcomes. Patients served may include neonate through adult-geriatric.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    To qualify for the position, the candidate must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Maryland. Candidate must have one year experience or more working in the LPN role. Successful completion of required hospital, nursing and unit orientation, including but not limited to current Basic Life Support course. Telemetry Nurse must pass a basic arrhythmia exam and have ability to recognize critical rhythms and seek intervention. Emergency Department LPNs must pass ACLS, PALS and Basic Arrythmia exam.

    CONDITIONS:

    The new hire or transfer employee will remain within this job category for a probationary period of three months. With a satisfactory criteria based performance evaluation, the employee will advance to a regular status employee. If the evaluation is not satisfactory, the employee will be terminated.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:

    The ability to read, analyze, and interpret physician’s orders and other written communication methods of the health care team is essential. Ability to respond to customer inquiries or to those of other members of the health care team must be present. The incumbent must demonstrate an ability to read and interpret age-specific data regarding patient conditions. He/she must demonstrate ability to speak and understand the English language and to communicate with the patient and family in an age appropriate context.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    Ability to perform basic math functions in the preparation and/or administration of medications, intravenous drips and other therapeutic interventions requiring calculation of dosages or intake and output. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to identify problems, develop course of action and follow through to resolute required. Ability to apply problem solving techniques and conflict resolution skills required.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

    Must possess current LPN license in the State of Maryland.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Individual will work in a clean, well-lighted environment. Requires pushing/pulling and lifting equipment weighing in excess of 35 lbs. up to 40% of the time. Requires lifting and positioning patients, weighing up to 300 lbs. with assistance of other staff members, up to 60% of the time. Requires walking and standing approximately 80% of the time; requires bending, reaching and sitting. Requires carrying supplies and other items weighing up to 35 lbs., approximately 40% of the time. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard Precautions and safe handling practices.
