Job Summary: The Reading Room Assistant for Radiology reports to the RIS Manager and indirectly to the Radiology Informatics Manager. With limited supervision, monitors all reading room and Radiologist activities to include regulatory and policy compliance requirements (wet readings, critical test results, report availability) and service standards. By preparing and analyzing the critical metrics in the entire imaging process (exam request final report), makes data driven suggestions to improve the delivery of care. Once implemented, these changes will be monitored using the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle of improvement. Ensures by direct or indirect involvement, that all verbal communication requests to radiologists in the reading room are proxied and routed appropriately to allow radiologists to focus on their own daily tasks. This specifically pertains to walk-in requests or phone call requests from referring physicians for PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) wet reads and verbal consults for critically ill and emergent cases. Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s). 1. Provides for optimal Radiology Reading Room workflow by working closely with the Radiologists, Radiology Informatics Manager, Schedulers and Film Library staff. Anticipates Radiologist needs based on patient volume and reading room call requests. Reviews PACS worklists and designates priorities manually or by working with the PACS team to develop robust worklists that meet the changing needs of patients and referring MDs. 2. Designs processes and workflow to maintain consistent level of service 24 X 7. 3. Communicates with Film Library staff and the department Administrative Assistant about Reading Room coverage M-F, 0730 1730, during the lunch hour and cell meetings for phone coverage. 4. Ensures that staff covering the lunch hour timeframe can locate a radiologist for a wet read request 5. Acts as liaison for Sonographers and Technologists needing to contact Radiologist for validation of performed exams prior to patient departure and availability in PACS. 6. Acts as a liaison for the Diagnostic and MR/CT Supervisor to coordinate wet readings and add on urgent exams. This includes the ability to discern complex medical questions using sound judgment 7. Checks (when necessary) the daily radiology report totals in pending or preliminary status and text page Radiology Attendings and Residents with unsigned report totals at a predetermined daily schedule. 8. Monitors the Remote Report Distribution queue in Cerner for faxed radiology reports. Escalates failed transmittals and ensure all reports are distributed 9. Ensures phones in reading room get answered or messages get transferred to appropriate Radiologist 10. Participates in the protocol cell meetings coordinating MD to MD consult when required. On occasion will lead the cell meetings. 11. Responds to requests from Radiologist when they need to provide information to a referring MD. All requests will be tracked and validated for quality assurance. 12. Validates radiology exam billing, analyze anomalies to prevent in future 13. Assists the Radiologist and Film Library to coordinate complex imaging requests. 14. Performs an inventory of the Radiologists workstation environment and provides quality assurance: Tests the dictation system; Cleans the PACS monitors with screen cleaner; Assess Radiologist workspace in the reading room and procure office supplies as necessary; Ensures that all ancillary support equipment in the reading room is working properly, involves the appropriate manager for escalation and resolution. 15. Plans and coordinates activities dealing with dictation systems integration, under the general guidance of department Managers. 16. Monitors various metrics of assigned systems effectiveness and efficiency. This includes Report TAT, Billing, Critical Test results and Discrepancies (prelim to final) 17. Gathers, parses, and analyzes quantitative exam data to generate report on Radiologist Report Turnaround 18. Designs data collection system and monthly QA report for Reading Room Call Log Report 19. Validates C-phone functionality and alert the Informatics Manager of service-related needs. 20. Prepares PACS images for cardio-vascular conference 21. Completes performance appraisal and competencies/annual requirements (Healthstream, etc.) on time. Actively participate in attaining professional goals 22. Provides recommendations to LPCH Radiology Leadership regarding suggestions on improving reading room workflow Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
