Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Associates of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy required, Business, or other related healthcare field required. Bachelor's degree with management course work preferred.
- ACLS or PALS certified within 3 months of accepting the position
- Registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) required. Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist, Adult Critical Care Specialist or Registered Pulmonary Function Technician preferred
- CPR certification is required.
- Five years experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required. Three years of lead/supervisory experience required. Two years experience working in a Neonatal Pediatric ICU setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficient knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system is required. Relevant knowledge of biology, microbiology, technical mathematics, and pharmacology is required.
- Proficient knowledge of respiratory disease with the ability to recognize patients possessing pulmonary dysfunctions.
- Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, operation and use of standard respiratory equipment and supplies, such as, various types of ventilators, pulmonary function and diagnostic equipment, nebulizers, aerosol masks, nasal cannulas, and other equipment utilized by the department.
- Proficient knowledge of respiratory diseases and standard treatments in order to assist with the education and training of employees. Knowledge of respiratory care procedures (auscultation, administration of bronchodilators), respiratory surgical procedures, x-ray and arterial blood gas interpretation and lab result analysis.
- Ability to supervise, monitor daily work activities, evaluate, train and motivate performance of subordinate technical, professional and clerical support staff.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on various patient units. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills are necessary to work with respiratory care practitioners, technical staff, nursing and medical staff, as well as outside contacts and equipment vendors.
Patient Safety
The manager ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
- Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
- Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
- Works to continuously uphold all standards to assure successful TJC certifications.
