    Mammography Radiographer

    PRN Position; As Needed Schedule

    General Summary

    Works under the direct supervision of the Breast Imaging Center manager with daily activities and work schedule supervised by manager. Will perform digital screening and diagnostic mammograms and specimen radiography; will assist the radiologists in more advance procedures, i.e., needle localizations, stereotactic and ultrasound guided biopsies. Quality mammography guidelines set forth by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) must be observed.

    Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

    • Performs mammography and other breast imaging procedures for diagnostic purposes under the supervision of a radiologist. Reviews and evaluates images to determine if they are satisfactory.
    • Performs and documents patient assessment and history as it relates to breast imaging; provides patient care to meet the patient’s physical and psychological needs. Performs or assists with physical breast exam for mass/nodule localization.
    • Assists physicians (radiologists, surgeons, other specialists) to perform image-guided diagnostic and invasive procedures (e.g., stereotactic biopsy, needle localization, and ductograms)
    • Communicates with other caregivers to ensure quality, continuity and appropriateness of patient care.
    • Provides patient education related to imaging procedures, including breast self- examination techniques.
    • Applies knowledge and principles of radiation protection to achieve radiation exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) for patients, self and others.
    • Applies knowledge and principles of Universal Precautions, aseptic and sterile techniques, to minimize exposure to and spread of infectious organisms.
    • Maintains manual and computerized patient, department and hospital records. Performs associated data entry and clerical tasks as needed.
    • Ensures, safe and pleasant environment in the area, observing applicable safety and government rules.
    • Performs and documents equipment QC according to department protocol; recognizes and reports
    • any malfunction or variation to immediate supervisor, Asset Manager and/or Clinical Engineering as appropriate. Audits QC data for trend identification and compliance with policy.
    • Provides practical instruction for students and other health care professionals. Participates in the orientation and training of other Breast Center staff.
    • Demonstrates effective and appropriate communication and conflict resolution techniques with patients, visitors, co-workers and other health care team members.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
    • Attends in-service training programs and other relevant training sessions for professional growth and development.
    • Performs related jobs as required.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology is required. Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Advanced practice Mammography certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is required.
    • Licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. CPR certification is required.
    • Must maintain FDA requirement of at least 15 CEUs in a 36 month period that must include at least 6 CEUs in each mammographic modality used.
    • A minimum of one year experience performing breast imaging procedures is preferred, however, not required. Familiarity with both ACR and FDA accreditation practices and regulations is required.
    • Basic computer literacy for data entry and record maintenance.
    • 4. Ability to accurately position the body for breast imaging. Utilize techniques to physically manipulate and apply accessories to produce desired image.
