    The Pulmonary Hypertension Medical Science Liaison is able to serve as a resource to colleagues and to contribute to the department's success. The MSL is responsible for providing fair balanced, objective, scientific information and education to health care customers and to internal business partners as required by business needs. The MSL is responsible for building external relationships with recognized experts in therapeutic and managed markets/health care systems areas of interest to identify and address scientific needs and stay abreast of the current scientific trends. The MSL is responsible for conducting all activities in accordance with current regulatory and health care compliance guidelines.     Essential Functions:

    1. External Customer Support (70% of time):

    a. Integrate in-depth scientific, healthcare market, and local environmental considerations into a compliant response that delivers a solution to scientific inquiries of local and regional KOLS/investigators/health care systems/academic medical centers, and payer systems.

    b. Educate one more expert speakers via approved speaker training programs.

    c. Develop and posit creative solutions applying clinical/scientific and organizational knowledge to facilitate successful research collaboration with investigators.

    d. Facilitate understanding of company resources to customers and how they provide solutions for the customer.

    e. Integrates real life practice considerations with data and information, presenting it in a logical manner appropriate to the audience and request.

    f. Uses if-then thinking/critical thought analysis to anticipate obstacles and next steps to execute an integrated Medical Affairs/MSL strategic plan, specifically in reference to clinical investigator sites, working to identify sites, resolve issues with enrolled sites that are posing a barrier to study conduct as well as approved proactive activities.

    g. Identifies areas of potential scientific need/gaps and works with leadership to develop and execute plans regarding proactive outreaches as approved via the legal/HCC exceptions process.

    1. Department Operations and Internal Partner Support (30% of time):

    a. Establishes ongoing systems/habits/networks in addition to planned trainings to maintain thorough understanding and demonstrates competence in the following areas: responsible therapeutic area and Medical Affairs Field (MAF) mission, vision and operating principles; relevant operating company scientific data and objectives; relevant market dynamics and competitive landscape; regulatory and health care compliance guidelines affecting MAF and pharmaceutical industry; corporate policies on appropriate business conduct and ethical behavior; all SOPs and guidelines affecting MAF; all requirements for appropriate behavior and documentation of activities.

    b. Proactively suggest/communicates with supervisor and business partners to involve appropriate thought leaders in programs and projects.

    c. Proactively suggest to supervisor a developmental plan, including implementation steps and timelines for completion.

    d. Identifies, develops, and conducts regional and local projects as approved by management.

    e. Actively listens and records scientific voice of customer providing an analysis and scientific significance.

    f. Develop and maintain a regional scientific landscape plan identifying major systems of care, research capabilities, and interdependencies in the delivery of local and regional health care.

    g. Serves as a mentor to peers in the areas of effective customer interaction, application of technology, and company processes.

    h. Provides oversight for projects/initiatives as directed by management.

    i. Completes all required and relevant exams with an acceptable passing score.

    j. Performs all administrative requirements in a timely, accurate and compliant manner (e.g. expense reports, documentation of unsolicited requests for information).

    k. In collaboration with regional/district sales leadership, provide regional and local support to enhance sales training initiatives and improve competencies of field personnel.

    Doctorate: PharmD/PhD/MD/DNP

    Other: Or other professional terminal degree and commensurate experience

    Related Experience:

    At least 5 years of clinical experience and/or past MSL experience

    Research and health care system knowledge is required.

    Specific Competencies/Skills Required:

    The MSL is responsible for: Identifying, developing suggested solutions, and providing scientific support for appropriate educational initiatives. Serving as a liaison for investigator-initiated research initiatives. Assuring compliance with all relevant corporate and regulatory guidelines. Identifying issues and developing innovative scientific solutions to meet health care providers’ needs and recognizing the applicability beyond their own geography. Prioritizing issues and opportunities based on customer needs as well as local, regional, and national environmental factors, taking ownership and demonstrating accountability to achieve results. Serves as a resource to other MSLs and internal partners in interpreting data and new information to better understand situations and draw appropriate conclusions. Maintaining performance, professionalism, and integrity in stressful situations and multiple task settings. Coordinating with other Medical Affairs and Scientific Affairs personnel to maintain consistency and avoid redundancy. Extensive planning will be required to effectively manage multiple, concurrent priorities. The MSL is expected to identify and/or develop alternate solutions and recommend optimal approach(s) for action. The recommendations are expected to emphasize creative solutions that minimize the need for incremental resources and support the company’s scientific objectives. They must work collaboratively with internal business partners to meet the scientific needs of customers. They will maximize the use of resources to support scientific initiatives.

    External and Internal Interactions:

    The MSL will meet with local, regional and national thought leaders as frequently as is requested. Will make objective, fair balanced scientific presentations to external health care provider requestors and internal business partners. Will work with supervisor to continue development and enhance performance of self and the broader team. Will collaborate with internal business partners and colleagues to better meet the scientific needs of external health care providers.

    Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions:

    The MSL must be able to:

    Lift and transport work materials. Work additional and flexible hours beyond a 40-hour workweek and travel on weekends (e.g., conventions, meetings). Have a valid driver’s license as a condition of employment and operate an automobile. Ability to travel within and outside of the US frequently; up to 75%.
