    Janssen R&D is seeking a highly motivated summer intern with a background in biology to join our Neuropsychiatry Discovery research team in La Jolla, CA. We seek a candidate who is passionate about discovering and developing innovative therapeutics for central nervous system (CNS) disorders.

    Responsibilities:

    The primary responsibility of this summer intern will involve experimental work, with the candidate dedicating most of their time at the bench to generate data under the close supervision of their mentor. The successful intern will assist the neuropsychiatry team in developing and comparing in vitro assays related to synaptic phagocytosis, employing imaging techniques and flow cytometry.

    Candidates should have a genuine enthusiasm for bench science, a strong scientific curiosity, self-motivation, and the ability to work efficiently. Excellent interpersonal skills to foster collaboration with peers and team members, alongside strong written and verbal communication abilities, are essential for success in this position. Additionally, candidates must adhere to good laboratory practices, including maintaining detailed laboratory notebooks.

    This internship presents an excellent opportunity for an undergraduate or recent graduate to collaborate within a cross-functional team in a pharmaceutical laboratory environment. Interns will gain first-hand experience in the planning, execution, analysis, and reporting of experiments while receiving mentorship from experienced professionals. Interested candidates should possess a strong eagerness to learn about the drug discovery process and a desire to contribute to improving global health outcomes.

    Qualifications

    • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited university throughout the internship, pursuing an undergrad or graduate degree in a science-related field such as Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, or Pharmacology.
    • Completion of at least the first year of undergraduate studies at an accredited university is required.
    • Strong analytical and quantitative skills are essential.
    • Previous hands-on laboratory research experience is preferred, particularly in in vitro cell culture.
    • Candidates should be enthusiastic team players with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the U.S. and must not require sponsorship for employment visa status, either now or in the future (e.g., H1-B, F-1).
    • This position is based in La Jolla, CA, and requires 100% on-site presence.
    • The anticipated base pay for this position is Sophomore $28.50/hr, Junior $30.00/hr, Senior $32.00/hr, Master’s degree $38.00/hr.
