    The Optum Corporate Strategy team helps drive major strategic initiatives in our company. As trusted advisors to our senior leadership, we work very closely with them, including the Office of the CEO and the Executive Operating Committee. We are a small, highly effective and talented team of individuals from top tier-MBA programs. The majority of the team has strategic background in consulting or corporate strategy. As a member of the team you will have exposure to the think tank that spear head the future of health care. As a part of this team and Optum your work will help shape and impact the future of health care.

    The Associate Director Intern, Corporate Strategy will have the opportunity to learn about the different business functions, strategy and culture of Optum, and UnitedHealth Group. The intern program will provide the incoming candidate the ability to evaluate Optum as a full-time job opportunity and their fit with the organization and the team.

    You will be a key member of the Optum corporate strategy team with the responsibility of supporting the business, market research and analytical needs of the team. As the Associate Director Intern, you will work closely with the V.P. and Directors and support them on key business initiatives for Optum, ultimately with the goal of you becoming a senior leader within our organization.

    You should be able to gather business information and synthesize it logically and analytically. The desired candidate should have the ability to play various roles developing insights into markets, customers, and strategic direction. You should also be able to create presentations based on a story board that is provided by the senior members, or on your own. As part of this program, you will meet and interact with the senior most leadership across Optum and have the opportunity to collaborate with them.

    • Overall business planning and growth planning for Optum
    • Business Plan and development for Optum Labs, a collaborative research and development facility with a singular goal: improving patient care. Mayo Clinic is Optum’s first industry partner
    • Strategic thinking and rationale behind Capability Gap Assessment and M&A decisions for our businesses
    • 3-year strategy and business planning for the individual business units
    • Evaluation of international growth opportunities
    • Development of transformational 3rd party partnership opportunity

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Analyze industry trends, customer needs, competitive threats, expansion opportunities and internal performance
    • Perform primary and secondary market research to generate strategic intelligence and insights
    • Deliver data-driven insights to support actionable strategic direction, corporate prioritization, and communication
    • Support the corporate planning process and ad hoc projects for executives, corporate requests, and special events
    • Build market and competitive intelligence reports, dashboards, and tracking structures
    • Produce and present PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets that communicate/translate results derived into meaningful charts and insights that are easily understood and valued by internal and external audiences
    • Create an immediate impact in a fast-paced environment with multiple and changing demands. Multi-task and support multiple project needs

  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • Undergraduate degree
    • Currently pursuing an advanced degree – MBA - with a target graduation date no later than June 2018.
    • Ability to work as a summer intern at the Optum location in Minnesota, during the summer of 2017
    • Proficiency with business and analytical tools (e.g. MS Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Ability to quickly create high quality PowerPoint Presentations and Excel Analysis
    • Minimum of three years of previous professional work experience
    • Minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA
    • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization (F-1 students with practical training and candidates requiring H-1Bs, TNs, etc. will not be considered)

    • Proven ability to articulate business strategies and formulate concise solutions to complex problems
    • Previous management and strategy consulting experience from a top tier firm
    • Experience developing market overviews, understanding competitive positioning, analyzing market trends, and understanding customer needs
    • Superior conceptual, analytical and financial modeling skills
    • High energy, detail oriented and creative individual
    • Strong organization skills with ability to prioritize and multi-task
    • Strong team and relationship skills
    • Currently pursuing a MBA with focus on strategy and business development or marketing
    • Experience in the health care industry and/or background in IT/analytics/information services
