    Job Description

    Full time, day shift (M-F, 8A-4:30P)

    ** General Summary**

    Under direct supervision of the on-site physician, assists in the delivery of patient care. Performs delegated medical tasks, assists physician and nursing staff with patient care and may perform clerical duties. Where electronic system is in use, this position will utilize the EMAR for documentation purposes. Fulfillment of job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas and to transport medications to/ from medication storage and delivery areas. Fully participate in the day to operations and patient flow and acts as a resource for Medical Assistant I. Demonstrates leadership by collaboration, teamwork, communication, accountability, customer service, and advanced knowledge of clinical skills.

    Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

    1. Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record/EMAR. Act as a clinical resource for Medical Assistant I.
    2. Follows established guidelines to obtain necessary testing based on the chief complaint prior to the exam. Prepares patient for examination by the health care provider.
    3. Performs routine clinic testing, including but not limited to: obtaining blood and urine specimen, vision testing, hearing screening, pulmonary function testing, EKG, rapid point of care testing, and vital signs.
    4. Assists provider with procedures, including minor surgical procedures.
    5. Provides pre-printed patient education /material as directed by physician.
    6. Exhibits compassion and empathy for all patients and families at all times.
    7. Performs cleaning and disinfection of environment of care. Performs high level disinfection of equipment instruments per unit/hospital procedure.
    8. Maintains necessary supplies in clinical area.
    9. Functions effectively in all medical assistant roles specific to clinic. Works independently and serves as a resource for others. May precept new medical assistant and medical assistant students within the clinic.
    10. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient populations(s) served. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to address patient/family needs.
    11. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs. Provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
    12. Administers select medications and injections under direct supervision of physician as per clinic and hospital policy. Assist in the UMMS immunization program, including giving injections and tracking data in a computer program.
    13. Participates in medical assistant skill development and competency evaluation. Participates in clinic peer review process.
    14. Responsible for self-learning; attends educational offerings and in-services independently.
    15. Models customer service behaviors and integrates best practices for service and operations.
    16. Participates in clinic based process improvement efforts.
    17. Active participant in clinic huddles/staff meetings;
    18. Supports clinic operations such as supplies, equipment maintenance, etc…
    19. Addresses environment of care needs and plays active role in compliance with regulatory requirements.
    20. Assists with front desk operations to include but not limited to: patient check in and check out, scheduling, filing, patient phone calls, authorization, and informing patients of possible delays.
    21. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Patient Safety

    Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

    1. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
    2. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
    3. Implements policies, procedure, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
    4. Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members.
    5. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    ** Education and Experience**

    1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
    2. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
    3. One (1) year of medical assisting and medical clinic experience required.
    4. CPR certification required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    1. Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
    2. Knowledge of blood and body fluid precautions.
    3. Demonstrated skill in venipuncture.
