  • Responsibilities

    Function as a key member of the Pedi Oncology Department nursing care team, participating in the implementation of select components of the patient’s plan of care under the direct training of the registered nurse, charge nurse, clinical coordinator, and nurse manager. Promote exceptional customer service with patients and their families and makes recommendations for improved patient care and the promotion and maintenance of a safe, cost-effective healthcare environment. Assist the registered nurse in providing ADL (activities of daily living) needs of patients. Communicates and documents patients’ status.

    Perform venous and capillary punctures on patients. Process laboratory specimens for subsequent analysis. Provide instructions to patients regarding specimen collections. Perform waived testing according to Hospital policy. Communicates and documents all pertinent data.

    Participate in various continuing education programs, surveys and attends staff meetings as directed. Follow policies and procedures supporting performance improvement efforts in patient care services. Perform related duties as required.

    Required Skills

    1. Competent in clinical skills required of Emergency Department Patient Care Technician.
    2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
    3. Ability to function effectively in a challenging environment.
    4. Proficient in venipuncture and capillary techniques.
    5. Proficient in waived and moderate complexity testing procedures.
    6. Knowledge of medical terminology.
    7. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
    8. Ability to read and comprehend English at a level necessary to follow written and oral instructions and safety precautions.

    Required Experience

    Work Experience

    • One year phlebotomy experience.

    Education and Training

    • High school diploma or equivalent.

    License/Registration/Certification

    • CPR (from the American Heart Association)
    • ASCP, NCA, equivalent phlebotomy certification, or MA certificate required ****
