    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY: Attend scheduled classes/clinical rotations in a Nursing Assistant program approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON). The MBON approved course prepares you to safely perform delegated nurse functions with clients of any age and various levels of physical, sensory, motor, and emotional ability. Practice skills learned in clinical placement provides experience in acute care/hospital setting under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Maintains in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment, assists the patient care team to provide various patient care activities and maintains customer service focus essential for smooth operation.

    JOB TASK LIST

    • Identify the nursing assistant’s role in relation to the healthcare workplace, especially in relation to the performance of delegated nursing functions. Function in a healthcare environment utilizing professional standards of conduct.
    • Demonstrate the use of infection control techniques.
    • Provide an environment that promotes safety for patients, caregivers, and others.
    • Identify and apply basic observational recording and reporting skills.
    • Apply interpersonal relationship skills in the healthcare workplace. Use effective communication techniques to promote the patient’s wellbeing.
    • Individualize care to meet the needs of the patient.
    • Describe the ethical and legal issues affecting the work of the nursing assistant.
    • Perform and/or assist the patient with personal grooming and hygiene, including CHG bath or soap/water complete bath.
    • Identify the importance of food and basic nutrition to the patient, and nutrition’s role in health and illness. Assist clients to need nutritional needs.
    • Obtain intake and output data for a variety of clients and record/report results.
    • Utilize EPIC patient care documentation.
    • Position the patient with ambulation. Perform range of motion exercises.
    • Define ADLs. Assist the patient with toileting.
    • Demonstrate a basic understanding of disease process and chronic vs. acute illness. Perform selected treatments on a variety of patients.
    • Identify and discuss common mental health problems.
    • Identify a basic understanding of confusion dementia.
    • Prepare patients for surgery and care for them afterwards.
    • Compare and contrast the features of acute and long-term care.
    • Describe ways to improve patient satisfaction/experience. Describe the techniques used for AIDET.
    • Understand general concepts of hospital reimbursement.

    MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    ** Education & Training:** **** High School diploma or equivalent required. Actively enrolled in a Nursing Assistant program approved by the Maryland State Board of Nursing.

    ** Work Orientation & Experience:** Previous customer service experience preferred. Availability to attend training classes and clinical rotations.

    ** Skills & Abilities:** Ability to: a) read, write and comprehend medical terminology; b) effectively convey verbal and written information; c) follow directions; d) perform simple mathematical calculations correctly; e) respond to emergency situations appropriately; f) adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the hospital, including all shifts; g) effectively function as a member of a collaborative team; h) organize and manage time effectively, setting appropriate priorities; i) comply with OSHA standards; and j) understands and respects importance of patient privacy and confidentiality; k) develops and promotes a constructive/positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to maintain cooperation with and assist fellow health team members, physicians, intra and inter-departments, hospital and nursing administration.
