JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of a licensed pharmacist, performs clerical and technical tasks in the preparation, delivery, procurement and dispensing of pharmaceuticals within the hospital setting. Interacts with other healthcare providers and patient populations ranging from the neonate to elderly. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Education & Training: High School diploma or equivalent required. Valid Registration as Pharmacy Technician by the Maryland Board of Pharmacy. Work Orientation & Experience: Prior hospital pharmacy technician experience is preferred. Skills & Abilities: Ability to solve mathematic/algebraic calculations required for dosage determinations and solution preparation. Ability to perform technical functions associated with drug distribution systems; Ability to perform the manipulative and recordkeeping functions associated with the dispensing of prescriptions for ambulatory patients, including the completion of the billing; input data accurately; maintain confidentiality. Strong written and oral communications skills; Working knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terms, drug names, abbreviations, and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing, administering, and charting of medications in the institution; Working knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled during preparation and delivery. Demonstrate working knowledge of drug dosages, routes of administration, and mechanical or automated delivery systems; Working knowledge of the procedures and operations related to manufacturing, compounding, and labeling of drug products; Working knowledge of the procedures and operations related to aseptic (IV) compounding and parenteral admixture operations.
