  • Responsibilities

    Job Description

    NOTE: This position is partial retail and partial working with the Pharmacy filling inpatient prescriptions. Delivering Medication to patients is part of the daily job duties.

    ** General Summary**

    • Under general supervision, enters data related to prescriptions, and fills prescriptions from bulk or single-unit product. Acknowledges insurance plans and works with insurance companies to solve problems when necessary. Promotes and sells over-the-counter products. Handles money at the register.
    • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, and specific individual diagnostic needs of the patients served in his/her department. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group (pediatric, adolescents and/or geriatric patient group, culture and diagnostic specific).
    • Consistently expresses and demonstrates compassion and courtesy for patients. Extends courtesy and support to patient's families/visitors. Must be familiar with The Joint Commission medication management standards as they apply to anesthesia, the operating room and perioperative environment

    ** Education & Experience**

    • Successful completion of a pharmacy technician training program accredited by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacy or other approved organization is preferred.
    • Registration as a pharmacy technician with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy is required.
    • National Pharmacy Technician Certification preferred ( CPhT)
    • Completion of a high school level of course work with attainment of a high school diploma or possession of a State High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) is required.
    • Minimum of one-year experience as a retail pharmacy technician or equivalent work experience is required.

    ** Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**

    • General knowledge of accepted pharmacy principles, practices and procedures required.
    • Ability to perform mathematical operations required in recording and counting of inventory, processing supply requests and for record keeping purposes, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
    • Knowledge of generic and trade name drugs is required.
    • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills required in order to work with medical, nursing and various allied health staff in order to successfully provide optimal patient care.
    • Knowledge of insurance prescription cards, the ability to give price quotes and refill prescriptions is required.
    • Must be able to operate a cash register and credit card machine.
    • Highly effective verbal communication skills including courtesy, resourcefulness and efficiency in answering questions, giving directions, locating staff and explaining hospital/departmental policies and procedures are necessary. Verbal communication skills may include communicating with an interdisciplinary team, patients, and families. Effective writing skills are also required in order to take messages and maintain miscellaneous records, receipts, reports and logs.
