    Position Summary

    We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our team as a Phlebotomist. The Phlebotomist performs a wide variety of tasks in all areas of the clinical laboratory to include phlebotomy, which is the collection of blood specimens for clinical laboratory testing. The Phlebotomist will interact with patients, laboratory personnel, admissions clerk, nurses and physicians on a daily basis.

    Responsibilities

    1. Safety. Because all specimens and laboratory work surfaces may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV, Hepatitis and other blood borne pathogens, the Phlebotomist will be trained on proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment) and understand the proper way to handle the wide variety of supplies.
    2. Confidentiality. The Phlebotomist will receive training about the sensitive nature of information passing through the department and the hospital. All information will be held in the strictest of confidence and will be discussed only on an as needed basis in the performance of the duties of the job.
    3. Phlebotomy. Phlebotomists collect blood or other clinical specimens, and process samples for diagnosis, treatment and the prevention of disease in a CLIA laboratory. Because of the variety of tests available, there are a number of specific specimen collection procedures that must be followed. The Phlebotomist must be able to differentiate between similar test, orders with different collection requirements and recognize when a collection process may impact the test result (pre-analytical variables).
    4. Perform EKG testing on out-patients. Process final reports that are received. Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies.
    5. Communication Skills. The Phlebotomist will interact with not only patients, but also with the laboratory staff, physicians, nurses and registration personnel. The phlebotomist must demonstrate: Superior customer service skills, excellent communication skills and good computer skills, with use of basic office equipment. Ability to be a team player with effective interpersonal skills. Ability to remain focused and productive in stressful situation, ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with frustrated patients, families, staff, co-workers and providers. Excellent documentation skills, highly detained oriented and ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
    6. Blood Bank Inventory Management. Maintain stock of ice cubes for shipping blood products. Receive blood products from the airport. Pack up returning units of blood to the Blood Bank of Alaska.
    7. Clerical. Develop proficiency in Electronic Medical Records and Laboratory Information Systems. Verify insurance coverage / medical necessity of laboratory tests by accessing a web data base. Understanding the functions of Microsoft Word and Excel programs. File lab reports, distribute mail and faxes. Maintain inventory of laboratory forms. Answer the telephone and perform other clerical duties.
    8. Housekeeping Duties. Stock the laboratory work areas. Dispose of biohazardous waste. Clean laboratory glassware. Stock bleach bottles. Perform some periodic maintenance (eye wash, shower, etc.). Stock phlebotomy trays, carts and EKG carts. Process incoming supplies, stock by rotation and reconcile packing slips with purchase orders. Ensure all reference lab collection supplies are adequately stock and in long dating.
    9. Perform Other Duties as Assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications are graduation from high school with some previous healthcare experience being helpful. There is no license required for performing duties as described and most tasks are learned on-the-job. Proficiency must be demonstrated before a Phlebotomist can perform duties without direct supervision.

    1. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or willingness to obtain.
    2. Must be able to pass a background check with a third-party company and a State of Alaska Background Check through the BCU program.
    3. Must be able to successfully pass a drug screen (including Marijuana).

    Working Conditions

    1. Works in a clean, well-lit environment around patients, residents, family members and employees.
    2. This is an onsite position within a healthcare facility.
    3. The position is full time with benefits, day shift, 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday.
