Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Registered Respiratory Therapist - Per Diem Days 07:00 AM - 07:30 PM Rotating Schedule/weekends - Re.
In this role, the successful candidate Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and the Administrative Director, and according to established policies and procedures, provides diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary problems.
Job Responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities:
* Covers assigned areas. Knows limitations and asks for assistance, if needed. Voluntarily helps other staff.
* Assists in the supervision of Respiratory Technicians.
* Makes regular rounds of assigned patients to assess patient status, ensures
* Reviews current Physicians’ to ensure orders are being followed.
* Following departmental and Hospital policies and preprinted orders, reads, interprets, and discusses with physicians their orders, test results, and the patient's condition to determine treatment requirements including type and duration of therapy, medication, and dosages ordered. Accepts verbal orders from physicians.
* Determines appropriate method of preparing and administering respiratory medications, observes for complications, and consults with MD when necessary to ensure respiratory therapy in accordance with physicians’ orders, preprinted orders, and standards of care.
* Confers with patients and/or family members to obtain pertinent patient information such as history of respiratory problems, current medications, past medical/surgical history.
* Reviews patient's charts/computer to obtain blood-gas results, radiography reports, and other pertinent information.
* Provides patients and their families with education on their respiratory disease and care.
* Maintains knowledge of current trends and techniques in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other literature and attending related seminars. Assists in inter-and intra-departmental instruction.
* Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required.
* Attends 60% of department meetings, reads departmental communications via e-mail, and other scheduled functions.
* Maintains clean and orderly workplace, and work habits.
Technical Responsibilities:
* Has a working knowledge of, operates, and monitors equipment such as oxygen therapy equipment, capnography equipment, BiPAP machines, and mechanical ventilators.
* Administers oxygen therapy and respiratory care medications.
* Checks equipment for proper set-up, functioning and settings, and verifies physicians’ orders before initiating procedures and treatments.
* Cleans and maintains equipment following departmental policies and practices.
* Attaches therapeutic equipment to patients using safe and appropriate methods.
* Monitors, manages and assesses patients of all age groups on continuous mechanical ventilation including specialized modes of ventilation in accordance with department policy.
* Establishes and maintains patient airways, including all suctioning techniques, endotracheal intubation, nasotracheal intubation, and naso-oropharyngeal airways. Performs tracheostomy tube changes and care.
* Performs radial, brachial and femoral arterial punctures in accordance with departmental policy. Obtains blood samples from indwelling arterial catheters. Interprets results of arterial blood gases.
* Performs diagnostic pulmonary function studies (if service provided).
* Performs electrocardiograms (EKG) according to departmental policy.
* Stocks respiratory care supplies in the department and on the floors.
Documentation:
* Legibly documents in patient chart, departmental forms, and any other Hospital forms all pertinent patient information following departmental and Hospital policies.
* Documents any patient or family education on the Hospital patient and
* Family education form.
* Fully completes departmental forms such as the ventilator flow sheet, patient profile cards, and intubation records.
* Accurately receives and transcribes verbal orders.

* Explains treatment procedures to patients and/or family members to allay fears and elicit cooperation.

* Promotes teamwork and customer satisfaction.
* Is sensitive to the psychosocial needs of patients and their families.
* Accepts assignments willingly.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Current New York State Respiratory Therapist license, BLS and PALS.
Must have the knowledge of medical terminology, respiratory therapy procedures, techniques and objectives of therapy administration of therapeutic medical gases and other medications.
Must meet all educational requirements for Registered Respiratory Therapist as required by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
Must have the ability to walk, move, stand for extended periods and must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 0-25 pounds.
Required Licenses: Resp Thrpst License-NYS

Long Island Community Hospital provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $54.58 - $54.58 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
