  • Responsibilities

    The Release of Information Specialist is responsible for demonstrating knowledge of HIPAA privacy regulations as evidenced by appropriate handling of patient information; promoting confidentiality and using discretion when handling patient information. Follows all federal, state and hospital guidelines for release of information. Duties include answering phones, greeting visitors, general clerical functions and other duties as assigned. 98% accuracy is expected for all tasks.

    Required Skills

    1. Reviews all requests for release of information and subpoenas for HIPAA compliance.
    2. Logs and scans all requests into the Medical Records Online system.
    3. Processes all requests for release of information timely according to department standards.
    4. Retrieves worklist from MRO system daily.
    5. Reviews medical record documentation to determine appropriate information to be released.
    6. Accurately identifies medical record documentation and circumstances which require special authorization.
    7. Uploads medical record documentation from HPF, Meditech, eClinicalWorks, microfiche or paper records into MRO software.
    8. Works closely with MRO, Business Office, Case Management, Group Practices and other departments.
    9. Retrieves and refiles microfiche or microfilm reels.
    10. Opens and stamps in all mail daily.
    11. Performs receptionist duties as needed, answers phone, greets staff and visitors and directs them to the appropriate staff member.
    12. Refers privacy issues to the supervisor or Privacy Officer including questions regarding patient identification or invalid authorizations.
    13. Completes daily productivity report.
    14. Accurately enters data into MRO and other databases.
    15. Assists with other projects and reports as needed.
