    Required Skills

    Position Summary

    Locates and determines the portion of the earth’s surface by planning, conducting, and recording surveys.

    The following tasks are performed by Tunnel Surveyors:


    • Shaft and tunnel survey
    • Conduct surveys to establish and verify underground survey points
    • Plan and conduct surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, alignments, and other geodetic measurements
    • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports of surveys in order to describe and certify the work performed
    • Prepare or supervise the preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys
    • Record the results of surveys, including shape, contour, location, elevation, alignment, and dimensions of surface and underground features
    • Monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation
    • Performs other related duties as required

    The following knowledge is required to skillfully perform the job of Surveyor:


    • Experience in surveying underground features such as shafts and tunnels
    • Knowledge of general principles and methods for surveying, including documenting features of land, water, and underground works, including their physical characteristics, locations, and interrelationships

    The following skills are required to perform the job of Surveyor:

    • Experience with tunnel boring machine guidance systems and associated computer software
    • Experience with geotechnical instrumentation monitoring
    • Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to perform a job
    • Understanding technical language in work-related documents
    • Using mathematics to solve problems
    • Ability to communicate effectively

    The following physical demands are required to perform the job of Surveyor:


    • Ability to work in an underground environment
    • Constant bending, stooping, twisting, crawling, kneeling
    • Constant standing/walking on uneven surfaces
    • Occasional working with arms/hands raised above head
    • Constant hand and forearming activities
    • Occasional climbing of ladders, platforms, scaffolding
    • Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level
    • Occasional lifting up to 100 pounds with assistance
    • Ability to understand written instructions
    • Ability to see detail at a distance and at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
    • Work in environmental extremes of heat and cold dependent upon job location
    • Frequent work in dusty environments
    • Frequent work in areas of excessive noise
    • Work variable hours including overtime hours as needed
