Job Description This is a PRN position, Phlebotomy Tech I, for Outreach
Floater/Nursing Homes. JOB SUMMARY:Collects blood specimens for the
clinical laboratories. Functions as an intermediary between the patient,
patient caregivers, and the laboratories. Assures proper specimen
collection and identification in compliance with section policies and
procedures. Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with
age-specific guidelines for the age groups served. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduate or equivalent * One year phlebotomy experience
preferred REPORTS TO: * Section Manager or Assistant Section Manager
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Adheres to the general Medical Center standards
to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication
skills, interpersonal relationships and team building. * Assures
accurate and timely collection of blood specimens, according to
departmental practices. * Assures accurate identification and delivery
of patient samples to appropriate lab sections. * Follows proper safety
and identification procedures when dealing with patients and/or
specimens under any circumstance or environment. * Improves work skills
through self-study and continuing education. * Contributes to the smooth
and efficient operation of the section and department. * Protects self,
coworkers and facility by following approval policies and procedures to
prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. * Exhibits
and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with
hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and
standards of laboratory testing. * Provides age appropriate specimen
collection in accordance with age specific guidelines for school age,
adolescents, early adults, middle adults and/or late adults. SKILLS &
QUALIFICATIONS: * Ability to listen and communicate effectively *
Ability to work cooperatively * Basic computer skills * May require
working any shift in a 24-hour period, 7 days/week, including holidays
and possibly taking call WORK ENVIRONMENT: * Exposed to infection from
disease-bearing specimens or patients * Exposed to risk of
bloodborne/airborne disease * Must wear protective equipment (gloves,
gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection) * May be exposed to
odorous chemicals and specimens * Moderate noise environment * Subject
to injury from sharps * May require judgment/action which could result
in death of patient * Subject to many interruptions * Occasionally
subject to irregular hours * Subject to stressful situations * Contact
