  • Responsibilities

    This position is 32 hours per week, working Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, shifts are 5:30am-2pm and 9:45 am to 6:15pm.

    Union Gospel Mission of Salem incorporated in 1953 as a Church charged with the responsibility of
    reaching others for Christ. Our Mission Statement calls us to "Help men, women and children break free
    from homelessness through the transforming grace of Jesus Christ." As such, every position at UGM of
    Salem is an extension of this ministry and therefore a ministry of the Christian faith.

    1.Under the supervision of the Kitchen Manager, prep, cook and serve meals according to planned menus.
    2.Adjust menu as needed.
    3.Assist with receiving donated and purchased food and other food service supplies as needed.
    4.Provide training to volunteer and/or assigned program women as instructed. ,
    5.Maintain a positive, encouraging Christian work atmosphere by demonstrating and training staff in appropriate Customer Service C.A.R.E. standards.

    6. Assist Kitchen Manager to maintain a clean, sanitary and safe workplace including food storage areas.
    7. Reports all food service equipment and/or maintenance issues to the Kitchen Manager daily.
    8. Participate in weekly kitchen staff meetings.
    9. Attend various Mission functions and meetings as required.
    10. Assist with other duties as directed by the Kitchen Manager.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    1. Cooking experience with a desire to learn the cooking and prep skills necessary to assist in preparing meals for large groups.
    2. Good organizational skills with ability to work in a multi-task environment.
    3. Valid Food Handlers Card.
    4. Valid Oregon driver's license and ability to drive Mission vehicle.
    5. Must agree with Union Gospel Mission's Statement of Faith and Standards of Conduct.
    Education: High School or GED

    Experience: 1 - 3 years cooking in a restaurant and/or institutional food environment preferred but not required.
