Examples of Work (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) * Identifies persons for law enforcement purposes by obtaining and comparing fingerprints, photographs, and computer information; * Obtains inked ten print and palm cards; scans fingerprints and palm prints into live database; * Collects DNA specimens in accordance with applicable collection and handling procedures; * Verifies fingerprints and enters fingerprints into automated database along with pertinent information such as case identification number, race, sex, and birth date; * Reads fingerprint classifications and compares to ink or scanned ten prints; * Photographs prisoners/suspects and enters into automated mugshot system; * Questions prisoners/suspects regarding any tattoos, marks, or scars; informs applicable Police unit if tattoo is gang-related; may photograph gang-related tattoos; * Obtains criminal histories for Police personnel using LEADS software; * Registers convicted felons released from prison by acquiring relevant demographics, obtaining ten prints and palm prints, and taking photograph to enter into computer system; * Maintains records/files of known finger and palm prints; * Files identification information; * Operates various computer terminals in order to transmit and retrieve information, create and update files, and conduct file searches; * Delivers and receives documents between the CPD Identification Unit and the Franklin County Identification Bureau; * May testify in court as an expert witness; * May communicate with individuals who have limited English language skills; * May be required to stand for extended periods of time in order to obtain fingerprints. Minimum Qualifications In order to qualify for this promotional examination, you must be a current City employee and now have, or have had during your continuous service with the City, permanent status in the classification of Fingerprint Technician Trainee. You must also meet the Minimum Qualifications listed below: Completion of the twelfth school grade andone (1) year of experience as a Fingerprint Technician Trainee with the City of Columbus or comparable experience. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma. Possession of LEADS/BCI certification by the end of the probationary period. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required for some positions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Some knowledge of fingerprints; skill to accurately and efficiently enter data into a computer; skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations; ability to use a computer and relevant software; ability to copy numbers and letters accurately; ability to obtain, compare, and match fingerprints; ability to read and comprehend memoranda and textbooks; ability to speak about fingerprints verbally to co-workers, making oneself understood; ability to file records according to an alphanumeric system; ability to maintain composure while interacting with persons who are potentially hostile or violent; ability to interact and communicate with persons with limited English language skills; ability to stand for extended periods of time. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 45% covering reading comprehension and information ordering; a fill-in-the-blank exam weighted 45% covering definitions, fingerprinting, and computer systems; and a computer simulation exam assessing Microsoft 2010 Outlook, Word, and Excel weighted 10%. The exam is expected to be administered in July 2018. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time. All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. Once a candidate's name is certified, the Division of Police hiring process begins, which includes the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire, criminal background check, polygraph examination, interviews, and a pre-employment drug test.
