Location BMH Bronson Methodist Hospital Title Laboratory Clinical Assistant The Laboratory Clinical Assistant performs pre-analytical or post-analytical functions in the lab at a performance level above that of a phlebotomist or accession technician. The LCA will have direct laboratory experience usually obtained as a phlebotomist or accession technician. The job duties include a combination of the following: specimen collection, accessioning and processing of specimens, packaging of specimens sent to reference laboratories and release of results to caregivers. They provide pre-analytical training to phlebotomists, accession technicians, Medical Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists, Radiology Technicians, Patient Care Assistants and Graduate Nurses. The LCA may serve as phlebotomy charge in the absence of a supervisor. A high level of independence is required in some assignments such as a satellite facility. The LCA must respond to STATS and other priorities per policy and return specimens to the laboratory in an acceptable time frame and provide continual quality assurance checking for accuracy of test ordering. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. 6 months of prior patient care experience in a healthcare environment including computer data entry experience required. Formal training in phlebotomy or basic medical laboratory functions may substitute for the 6 months of prior patient care experience. Phlebotomist National Certification recommended Proficient in the use of Mysis Laboratory information system. Able to Access star for collection lists. Able to independently collect specimens. Demonstrated ability to effectively instruct others. Knowledge of basic biology, chemistry and mathematics (sufficient to measure and calculate metric quantities). Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills, including verbal and written communication, problem solving and assertiveness. Must have a customer service orientation providing service recovery where appropriate. Must demonstrate leadership and organization skills including the ability to work independently and take initiative. Must demonstrate a positive attitude. Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time. Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required. Patient Care Perform specimen collection including venipuncture and skin puncture on patients of all ages. Use established policy for prioritization of workload. Provide quality assurance for accuracy of test ordering and recognize testing that is illogical. Use the LIS for accurate order entry and cancellation of testing as appropriate. Answer department telephones, contact nurses, physicians and patients where required to clarify orders or request a recollection of specimens. Perform EKGs and specialized testing to include sweat chloride, bleeding time, NP swabs. Access and process testing to be sent to reference laboratories. Release results to hospital information systems and physicians. Maintain patient standing order files and solicit renewals as appropriate. Team Member Orientation and Orientation Evaluation: Competency assessment Analysis of educational needs Development and implementation of orientation action plan Evaluate effectiveness and appropriateness of orientation Document all training and competency verification Annual and Ongoing Team Member Competency Assessment: Performs scheduled competency assessments for phlebotomists, lab clinical assistants (LCA), Registered Nurses(RN) and Patient Care Assistants(PCA). Conducts first hand observation of skills for phlebotomists and lab clinical assistants to assess competence as needed or as part of ongoing competency assessment Documents all re-training and re-verification of competency Provides ongoing feedback to Phlebotomy Supervisor, Manager or Director for individual and group performance issues that fail to respond to re-training.
