    Job Description

    This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2025. Resume review begins in October 2024.

    The medicinal chemistry team is a key player of Biogen’s drug discovery process. We use property-based drug design and leverage our synthesis skills to develop life changing, highly differentiated, first-in-class or best-in-class medicines for treating neurological and rare diseases. As a co-op, you will have the unique opportunity to learn and contribute to drug discovery process and you will work closely with bench scientists to perform experiments to support on-going small molecule programs at Biogen.

    Position Description

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Conduct multistep synthesis to support on-going small molecule programs with the supervisor's assistance.
    • Work closely with the high-throughput experimentation team for reaction optimization.
    • Characterize synthesized compounds by NMR and LCMS.
    • Conduct scientific literature searches using databases such as SciFinder.
    • Maintain an accurate and current record of experimental results in an electronic laboratory notebook.
    • Participate in the research group and project meetings and communicate research results to the supervisor accurately and timely.
    • Maintain high standards of laboratory safety in compliance with the BIIB safety manual.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Must have completed 2 semesters of undergraduate organic chemistry and have experience in working in the laboratory (preferably 1-2 years).
    • Preference is given to candidates who have performed independent research.
    • Familiar with standard analytical techniques (NMR, TLC, HPLC, mass spectroscopy).

    To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

    • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
    • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
    • Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university

    Major: Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Medicinal chemistry

    Degree level: Bachelor, Masters, PhD

    This role is on-site in Cambridge, MA.
