  • Responsibilities

    Job Description

    Summary:

    The Slitter Operator is responsible for slitting and/or embossing line set up’s and operating the slitter line.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Responsible for set-ups and quality of product produced

    • Check schedule and maintain production and coil usage reports

    • Responsible for proper operation of all equipment in slitting department

    • Insures calipers are set at zero before measurements taken

    • Set up machine to slit widths and tolerances as required

    • Responsible for proper maintenance of knives and spacers as necessary to maintain the quality of the end product

    • Determines, directs and performs any knife adjustments or changes

      • Feed metal through knives and other in-line equipment to recoiler.
      • Operate machine, controlling tension and speed to slit master coil into specified widths and tolerances
      • Adjust edge guides and loop to maintain proper recoil
      • Check material for finish burrs and size within specified tolerances
      • Responsible for the quality of the end products as specified by the customer and required by supervision
    • Visually observe quality product being slit and recoiled

    • Operate upender, downender, hoists, coil cart and miscellaneous hand tools

    • Maintain records pertinent to job

    • Assist maintenance personnel during breakdown or overhaul as directed

    • Grease and oil machinery when necessary and keeps tooling items in proper place.

    • Inspects coils and identifies and reports defects

    • Reads and interprets production schedules

    • Verifies core length

    • Operates manual or electric shears to trim steel coils

    • Inputs and retrieves information from the AS/400 main frame

    • Reads and accurately records coil weights, order numbers, etc.

    • Measures OD of coils using a calibrated rule

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Operates manual or electric shears to trim steel coils

    • Operates core cutting equipment

    • Identifies coils by applying correct tags

    • Operate overhead cranes, coil cart, various hand tools to set up slitter, caliper, scales and miscellaneous hand tools.

    • Actively participates in adhering to plant housekeeping requirements by picking up trash, sweeping work areas, and returning materials and equipment to their proper locations

    • Understands and utilizes FIFO procedures in connection with paints, laminates and other materials

    • Places scrap metal and packaging materials into trash receptacles

    • Adheres to all safety and work rules

    • Adheres to and follows job specific SOPs

    • Assists and trains new employees

    • Maintains regular and on-time attendance

    • Reads and comprehends instructions regarding new equipment, equipment changes and/or procedural changes

    • Performs miscellaneous assignments as directed

    • Walk and stand for extended period of time to perform job function

    • Visual capacity to read and record coil weights, order numbers, etc

    Critical Demands:

    • Hand, eye and feet coordination to operate fork trucks

    • Squat, kneel or stoop frequently to perform job duties

    • Reach or extend forward for long periods of time to perform job duties

    • Ability to read and comprehend written materials such as schedules, SOPs, work rules, etc.

    • Ability to comprehend and follow oral instructions

    • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds

    • Walk or stand for extended periods of time

    • Stamina to work in extreme temperatures

    • Ascend and descend stairs

    • Dexterity to operate computers in order to enter or retrieve information

    • Communicate verbally or in writing with others

    • Fork trucks, propane and electric
    • Upenders
    • Jib crane
    • Various small hand tools
    • Power saw
    • Core cutter
    • Shears and knives
    • Coil grabbers
    • Personal protective equipment
    • Computers

    Work Environment:

    • Periodic temperature extremes, including temperatures over 90 degrees
    • Concrete or asphalt floors
    • Possible exposure to high levels of noise
    • Possible exposure to dust
    • Periodic exposure to fumes from paints and chemicals used in coating processes
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements:

    • High school level reading and writing, visual acuity to read labels, meters, gauges, documents and instructions
    • Ability to work in an industrial or warehouse environment with fork lifts, cranes, etc.
    • Ability to safely operate small manual and electric hand tools
    • Available to work up to 12 hours per day on rotating shifts, that could include weekends and holidays
