    Job Description

    Senior structural designer who serves as technical design contact for key client in the consumer electronics space. Participate in closing new business by creating and delivering packaging design and prototype solution for new and existing products. Communicate with stakeholders, including industrial designer, product developers and costing teams. Participates in and leads the design phase of a project beginning with analysis of the objectives, creative structural design and engineering of working prototypes, and on into production while meeting all manufacturing criteria and customer expectations. Provides visual solutions for packaging, advertising, and sales support needs by creating designs and copy layouts.

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead packaging design projects from inception to production. Maintain effective communication with client engineering team and internal global cross functions teams including sales, manufacturing and project managers.
    • Collaborate with Product Design Engineers and Designers on new products.
    • Design and engineer solutions in a wide variety of formats including folding cartons, rigid box, wrapped corrugated and other materials.
    • Design prototype visual communication in formats such as mockups, 3D drawings, tech drawing and instructions.
    • Maintain solid working knowledge of RRD capabilities and processes which will require international travel.
    • Create high-end flawless packaging prototypes for customer presentations using a Zund cutting table including v-grooves and finishing details such as deboss.
    • Interpret concrete and abstract directions from clients, sales and management to develop solutions that exceed customer expectations. Effectively communicate (both internally and externally) reasons behind decisions.
    • Maintain clear organization of large ongoing projects that involve multiple components and revisions.
    • Remain up to date on new packaging trends, materials and technology
    • Troubleshoot existing problems and provide creative cost-effective solutions.
    • Identify cost-saving opportunities related to materials, design, labor and efficiency.
    • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in discipline related to functional work (including Packaging, Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering). Master's degree preferred)
    • 5+ years of relevant work experience in structural design for packaging (preferably for retail, consumer products, technology or consumer electronics).
    • 2+ years experience designing precision automated consumer electronics packaging.
    • Ability to work flexible hours due to project requirements that involve both RRD's US and Global teams.
    • Strong communication and listening skills are required. These include the ability to explain program requirements, policies and procedures to a variety of stakeholders from various countries.
    • Fluency in Mandarin is preferred, as this position reports to and has a great deal of communication with RRD China.
    • Must be able consistently identify critical elements, variables and alternatives to develop solutions.
    • Must be able to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions.
    • Able to communicate clearly and courteously with those who need to know of decisions/actions/problems.
    • Requires excellent communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand.
    • Must be able to modify communication style both formal and informal to match the appropriate level of the audience targeted.
    • Requires strong understanding of the impact of a message on the organization or customer.
    • Advanced knowledge of packaging prototyping equipment and priocesses.
    • Minimum of 2 years' experience with all design tools software applications including:
    • Design eTools - 2D and 3D such as Artios CAD, NX, Solid Works and Rhino
    • Software - Microsoft Suite, MAC, Adobe Illustrator, TOP/CAPE, Agile and data analysis software
    • Equipment - Zund cutting table, 3D printer
    • Testing - Drop tester and ISTA, TAPPI and ASTM Testing STandards

    Additional Information

    The national pay range for this role is $73,500 to $120,800 / year. The pay range may be slightly lower or higher based on the geographic location of the hired employee. The actual pay offered may vary based upon, but not limited to: education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift and location. In addition to base salary, depending on the role, the total compensation package.
