Our organization's statement of purpose and reason for existence: We ensure the preservation of our community's environment, collect and manage Green Waste, Refuse and Recyclables in a professional, safe and efficient manner through teamwork, education and high quality service. The City of Fresno is currently seeking energetic, hardworking individuals for the position of Sanitation Operator. Assigned to the Solid Waste Management Division, incumbents participate in the collection of discarded waste materials; participates in community clean-up; conducts all activities according to the delivery and collection schedule; and courteously serves the public. Sanitation Operators work with independence in the field making decisions in accordance within established policies. Incumbents may be required to work in adverse weather, weekends and holidays. Incumbents are required to participate in pre-employment and random drug testing. ------------ Pay,Benefits, & Work Schedule As per the approved City of Fresno Fiscal Year 2019 Salary Resolution, this job class will have a salary increase effective March 18, 2019 with a new range of $3,777 - $4,589 per month. ------------ The Requirements These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify. TO QUALIFY, an applicant must have:

    • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent GED completion; AND
    • One year of experience performing waste collection activities, or two years of experience operating a commercial vehicle which requires a Class B Driver's License. Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License, without airbrake restriction, at time of application and continued maintenance of a valid Class B California Driver's License for the entire term of employment in this class. In addition, the ideal candidates will possess strong customer service skills, possess a clean driving record, be safety minded, and be able to deal with the public in a positive and courteous manner. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of six (6) months from the date the eligible list is created. ------------ Selection Process The examination process may consist of the following parts: PHASE I: WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 25%: A job related written examination may be administered which may test a candidate's ability to understand and follow written instructions, apply residential service rules, map reading, vehicle maintenance and preoperational vehicle checks, safety, and interpersonal relations/customer service. The written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 13, 2018. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the written examination to qualify for the performance test. Only a limited number of the top scoring candidates from Phase I will be invited to Phase II. NOTE FOR REQUIRED ACTION: Upon final scoring of the Written Examination, a limited number of the top scoring applicants will receive a request for Exam Reservation for Phase II. Those who do not respond to the request by the set cutoff date will not be scheduled for Phase II. Subsequently, the next highest scoring applicant will be invited. Therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure you are checking your email frequently so that you can receive and respond timely. PHASE II: PERFORMANCE TEST - 75%: A panel of subject-matter-experts may be assembled to observe a candidate's ability to perform a set of job-related tasks. The performance test will consist of two parts: performing a DMV type pre-trip vehicle inspection on a garbage disposal truck, and driving and operating a garbage disposal truck through a set of obstacles including dumping waste containers. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each performance part to qualify for the eligible list. The performance test is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 27, 2018. A candidate's final score and placement on the eligible list will be established by combining the passing scores of Phase I and Phase II. The City reserves the right to amend any phase of the examination process should there be a limited number of successful candidates. Should such amendment be exercised, a candidate's final score and placement on the eligible list would be based upon the completed test phase(s). ------------ Veteran Preference Regulations Qualified veterans who pass the examination may obtain five (5) additional points. Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service.
