    The Bioeffects Division of the 711 th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (711 HPW/RHD) seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-02, Computer Scientist at San Antonio, TX.

    This position supports research aims within the Directed Energy Bioeffects & Mechanisms Core Research Area, which focuses on building a knowledge base of human biological responses across the electromagnetic spectrum.

    Work includes:

    • Develops, operates, and improves computational models and applies best practices in computer science to define requirements, develop architectures, and lead verification and validation of multidisciplinary probabilistic and deterministic models representing biological responses to directed energy exposures.
    • Utilizes advanced computational skills, including machine learning and Artificial Intelligence to analyze, predict, and model complex responses to directed energy stimuli, and manage data.
    • Champions Agile practices and conducts data analysis and data visualization from experimental and simulation studies, including large data sets, and across distributed simulation environments.
    • Independently defines research objectives and determines how they may be best accomplished, develops and evaluates alternatives, defines the approach, conducts the analyses, and documents findings and products related to the electromagnetic spectrum.
    • Collaborates across interdisciplinary research teams to develop, define, and utilize advanced programming, probability and statistics, data analytics, data management and computer simulation technologies to meet current and future needs
    • Prepares research results for reports, publications, and presentations and briefs AFRL S&T leadership and broader scientific community and at national and international conferences and meetings.

    Required Qualifications

    • United States Citizenship
    • Males must be registered for Selective Service
    • These positions may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment
    • Security Clearance: This position requires possession of or the ability to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance
    • These are Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) positions and require a Level 1 certification (Foundational). The selectees will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience in this field equivalent to DR-01 (entry level) in the federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system.

    Desired Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

    • Master’s, Doctorate, or PhD in computer science, mathematics statistics, data analysis, or related field.
    • Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence Experience - experience with machine learning and/or artificial intelligence concepts, designs, development, and use to answer complex hypotheses.
    • Leadership Experience - experience leading diverse teams and managing complex projects to meet cost, schedule, and performance expectations
    • Computational Experience - advanced experience with coding languages such as MATLAB/R, Python, C+/C++.
