Fish & Wildlife Intern
Position Details:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, Tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and National Park Service are seeking an intern who will work in the Everglades ecosystem conducting field work and collecting data on the effects of hydrologic changes to tree island condition. Data will be organized and analyzed by the intern, who will then create a project deliverable that can be used to inform ecosystem restoration projects within the Everglades system.
Position Responsibilities will include:
Learning the native and exotic plant species in the Everglades
Learn scientific techniques, methodology, and principles of study design
Design and implement plant survey methods
Organize and analyze plant survey data (with assistance from a data specialist)
Create and report on project deliverables
Minimum Requirements:
Be interested and self-motivated towards expanding scientific knowledge
Willing to spend long days in the field including in undesirable conditions (e.g., heat, rain, wet, burgs, etc.) to complete data collection
Familiarity with computers and willingness to spend many hours organizing/analyzing data on the computer
Willing to undergo and pass a required criminal history check
A strong interest in a career in natural resource conservation science
You must be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps State & National Direct Service programs (must not have served more than 4 terms in AmeriCorps)
You must be available to work a 40-hour week for the 26-week term
You must be between 18 and 34 years of age
You must have received a High School Diploma or GED
You must be a member of a Federally recognized Indian Tribe, Band, or Village; Alaska Native; or meet one of the following descriptions
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants should have experience using Microsoft Excel or similar data management software
Have knowledge of native and exotic plants in South Florida
Have a background (internship, educational, or work experience) in biology, ecology, or similar scientific discipline
