    Job Overview

The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level engineer specializing in electromagnetic based nondestructive approaches to serve as an electromagnetics focused NDE Research Engineer in the Material State Awareness Branch (RXNW) of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic and Materials Performance Division (RXN). This post closes at 1600 hours on 7 Nov 2024.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Conducts fundamental and applied research to enhance the current state-of-the-art nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and material state sensing using electromagnetic approaches, including but not limited to eddy current, terahertz, x-ray, and millimeter wave sensing methods.
    • Leads contract research management activities spanning fundamental through advanced development programs that discover, develop and mature next-generation nondestructive evaluation NDE technology in electromagnetic sensing.
    • Conducts electromagnetic focused NDE experiments to characterize and quantify discontinuities/material properties/material microstructure (e.g. local crystallographic or electromagnetic properties, dimensional measurements) in advanced aerospace materials.
    • Develops and applies modeling and analysis approaches to include multi-physics modeling, signal processing, and enhanced data analytics to develop algorithms for forward simulations and inversion of NDE to understand and quantify the material state.
    • Develops and applies enhanced materials characterization techniques to evaluate the material state.
    • Identify innovative nondestructive approaches to determine the material state through collaboration with academia, industry, and other government agencies. Identify and pursue collaborative research opportunities from both internal and external funding mechanisms.
    • Define near- and far-term NDE S&T goals to address material state sensing approaches that address applications with complexity and variability present in Department of the Air Force (DAF) systems in collaboration with DoD and industry stakeholders.
    • Serve as Subject-Matter Expert to DAF weapon system program offices and other government agencies.
    • Write contractual technical documentation, purchase requests, and evaluate technical and cost proposals. Ensure satisfactory technical progress and fiscal performance of awarded contracts.
