    The Bioeffects Division of the 711 th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (711 HPW/RHD) seeks to hire a mid-level, DR-02, or DR-03, Laser Physicist at San Antonio, TX.

    This position supports research aims within the Directed Energy Bioeffects & Mechanisms Core Research Area, which focuses on building a knowledge base of human biological responses across the electromagnetic spectrum.

    Work includes:

    • Performs expert level professional engineering and scientific work involving the integration of engineering and other science disciplines (e.g., biology, physics, physiology, medicine, or chemistry) to enhance understanding of bioeffects along the electromagnetic spectrum.
    • Uses advanced laser optics knowledge to develop and implement new laboratory techniques and experimental equipment to advance laser bioeffects efforts.
    • Independently defines research objectives and determines how they may be best accomplished, develops and evaluates alternatives, defines the approach, conducts the analyses, and documents findings and products related to the electromagnetic spectrum.
    • It leads to interdisciplinary teams that interact, coordinate, consult, and collaborate directly with military and civilian scientists within AFRL, as well as national and international organizations to enhance bioeffects knowledge.
    • Prepares research results for reports, publications, and presentations and briefs AFRL S&T leadership and broader scientific community and at national and international conferences and meetings.

    Required Qualifications

    • United States Citizenship
    • Males must be registered for Selective Service
    • These positions may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length and Renewable Term Technical Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.
    • Security Clearance: This position requires possession of or the ability to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance
    • These are Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) positions and require a Level 1 certification (Foundational). The selectees will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year or 52 weeks of specialized experience in this field, equivalent to DR-01 (entry level) in the federal service or equivalent in an alternate pay system. Applicants must also meet the Basic Qualification requirements for 1310 (Physics), 1306 (Health Physics) or 0858 (Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering) series to qualify.     Desired Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills, and Acquisitions (KSAs):

    • Master’s, Doctorate, or PhD in Physics, Health Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
    • Laser Experience - experience with laser concepts, laser systems, and optical designs, development, and operation
    • Leadership Experience - experience leading diverse teams and managing complex projects to meet cost, schedule, and performance expectations
    • Computational Experience - Statistical and/or data analysis experience with coding languages such as MATLAB/R, Python, C+/C++.
