The AFRL Munitions Directorate seeks to hire a Mid-Level multidisciplinary engineer/computer scientist in the Virtual and Physical Environment Section (RWTSH) at Eglin AFB in Valparaiso, Florida.     Candidates will need experience in physical theories, concepts, principles, and processes in aerospace-related, mechanical, electrical engineering or computer science and/or working knowledge of physics-based simulation and analysis tools for electro-optical (EO) and/or infrared (IR) radio-frequency (RF) sensor technologies is desired and/or Experience with radio-frequency signature modeling, projection, simulation and/or analysis is highly desired and/or general understanding and experience working in a hardware-in-the-loop test facility for munition guidance, navigation and control systems is desired.

    Position duties include but are not limited to:

    • Utilizes professional electronics engineering theories, concepts, principles, and processes associated with work involving such items as electronic circuits, circuit elements, equipment, systems, and associated phenomena concerned with electromagnetic or acoustical wave energy or electrical information.
    • It applies extensive knowledge of the field of electronics engineering and expert knowledge of the assigned subject or functional area to resolve unique or novel problems.
    • Performs analysis and uses systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approaches to manage projects.
    • Determines how best to accomplish electronics engineering objectives, develops and evaluates alternatives, designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and interprets results, publishes papers and technical reports, delivers presentations of results, and monitors in-house activities.
    • Prepares contractual documents, technical reports, and/or evaluates technical proposals if needed.
    • Develops and maintains collaborations within and outside of AFRL.
    • Maintains a technical and programmatic cognizance of outside technological and research projects and programs; reports status to peers and senior technical leaders as required.
    • Organizes, manages and participates in workshops and technical exchange meetings as required.

    • This position is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level/Tier 1 (Practitioner) Non-Critical certification in Engineering & Technical Management (N).

    Specialized Experience:

    • A candidate must have experience with engineering development and/or managing multidisciplinary technical efforts related to aerospace engineering, computer science and computer engineering or related fields.
    • Desired experience involved working in an R&D laboratory and working with advancing technology development.
    • A good candidate will have recent technical experience (2 years of last 4 years) modeling or simulating electromagnetic phenomenology associated with sensors in weapon sensors or defense systems, working with computer processing systems or graphics programming applications, and C++ application development.
    • Experience is also highly desired by providing general technical contributions in a hardware-in-the-loop test environment, especially for radio-frequency sensor testing by modeling, signal injection and/or projection.
    • A strong candidate will have technical experience (3 of last 5 years) conducting physics-based modeling and analysis of electromagnetic phenomena related to weapon systems.
    • Career experience shows depth in relevant areas above with willingness to adapt and learn new modeling and analysis techniques for different spectra (EO, IR, RF and/or UV) relevant to guided munitions, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and related technology areas.
    • Previous experience with radio-frequency signature modeling and projection is highly desired.
    • The ideal candidate will have relevant and recent technical experience with target, background, environmental effects, and sensor modeling for guided munitions in a hardware-in-the-loop test environment (> 4 years in last 6 years), demonstrated by contributions in multiple complex assignments.
    • Physics-based simulation and analysis experience with visible, infrared or radio-frequency target/sensor data in a hardware-in-the-loop environment is highly desired.
    • “Fast-Line of sight Imagery for Targets and Exhaust plume Signature” (FLITES) coding experience is highly desired.
    • Individuals must have one year of specialized experience, which includes mastery of advanced electronics engineering concepts, principles, practices, standards, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment sufficient to apply experimental theories, principles, and concepts to project execution and advisory services.

    Desired Qualifications

    Experience with the technical areas below: An ideal candidate will have experience with the technical areas below:

    • Conducting physics-based simulation and analysis, and target and sensor modeling.
    • Previous modeling and simulation experience with aerospace phenomena.
    • Computer processing systems and/or modifying existing computer architectures to aid C++ application development.
    • Developing munitions-focused scene phenomenology software used in hardware-in-the-loop weapons testing.
    • The most relevant software for this position is Fast Line-of-Sight Imagery for Exhaust Signatures (FLITES).
    • Software-in-the-loop (scene injection) and/or hardware-in-the-loop testing (scene generation and projection) for munition sensors.
    • C or C++ programming languages, and graphics programming architectures including OpenGL and VULKAN are desired.
    • Signature modeling and analysis in the electro-optical, infrared, radio-frequency or ultra-violet spectra.
    • A Master's or Doctoral Degree is highly desired in an aerospace-related, mechanical, electrical engineering or computer science degree.
    • The ideal candidate would have their thesis or dissertation research pertaining to physics-based simulation and analysis, target and sensor modeling, aerospace engineering phenomena or related science and technology areas.
    • Demonstrated the ability to contribute or working on a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team to resolve technical challenges related to modeling aerospace phenomenon.
    • Experience with facilitating and enabling internal/external collaboration and partnerships for technology development.
    • Experience critically thinking about strategic and/or leadership guidance to plan technology development to remain relevant with current technology.
