    The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate is currently looking to fill ten (10) DU-0083-02 (GS 5-7 equivalent) Police Officer positions located at AFRL/RIOF in Rome, NY, openings are available on all 3 shifts. The primary purpose of this position is to enforce the law, maintain the peace, and protect life and civil rights within the jurisdiction of the military installation.

    • Performs and enforces the full range of police officer duties within the military installation.
    • Performs the full range of Base Entry Controller duties. Ensures individuals requesting access to the installation have the proper identification credentials before entering.
    • Performs the full range of duties for defending protection level resources.
    • Incumbent has full powers of apprehension and detention, which entails: carrying a firearm, mirandizing suspects, preserving evidence, and testifying in court as it pertains to enforcing regulations on a military installation.
    • Patrols the installation on foot or in vehicles; responds to alarms, irregularities, unusual/suspicious circumstances.
    • Serves as a Security Forces Dispatcher for the installation.
    • Responds to calls for emergency assistance, coordinates with civilian police, fire, rescue, and emergency units.
    • Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.
    • This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continue through full resumption of all functions. This position is designated mission essential based on local conditions. Mission essential personnel report for duty at normal times when the base is closed or delayed reporting is authorized, and remain on duty during phased or early release.
    • “This is a "Key" position. This entails continued performance of duties and responsibilities during periods of national emergencies and/or mobilization. You may be required to take part in readiness exercises; that you must be removed from military recall status; and that you may not join a reserve unit during your mobilization.

    Required Qualifications

    • United States Citizenship
    • Ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance
    • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing
    • Travel and/or performance of additional duties may be required
    • The work may require an employee to drive a motor vehicle and an appropriate, valid driver's license will be required.
    • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position
    • May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
    • May be required to wear special protective clothing such as coats, boots, vests, gas masks, and/or helmets
    • Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, required initial and annual physical fitness/physical agility tests, meet established hearing standards and discern colors, contrast, and depth
    • Must wear a uniform, meet applicable AF dress and appearance standards
    • Incumbent will be exposed to the day-to-day dangers associated with law enforcement and security duties.
    • Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience include knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property;

    4 Years course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position;

    Combination of education and experience

    Qualifications based on specialized experience: your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

    • Knowledge of police officer procedures and operating methods to perform the full range of police officer activities independently
    • Knowledge of special operating requirements, methods, and procedures for enforcing specialized personnel access controls and preventing unauthorized access to areas where stringent security requirements are enforced
    • Knowledge of the rights of detained individuals and organizational rules regarding the appropriate use of force to be used in the apprehension of persons
    • Knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques for functioning as a quick reaction force team member in support of integrated base defense and of the operation of specialized weapons, security systems, and equipment
    • Knowledge of the tactics, techniques, and procedures necessary for preparation and response to catastrophic events, enemy attacks, and related threats to installations
    • Ability to operate the Incident Management System and the Security Force Management Information System
