MAJOR FUNCTION: The Criminal Justice Instructional Coordinator is located at the Florida Public Safety Institute in Havana, Florida. This position will manage and conduct administrative and educational coordination of Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training and continuing education courses. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Schedule and prepare class schedules for Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training classes. Coordinate and schedule classroom facilities, laboratory facilities, instructors and other instructional resources for basic recruit and continuing education courses with other academy personnel to minimize resource conflicts. Identify instructional equipment and resource needs for law enforcement training. This position will recruit new instructors in order to maintain a quality instructor pool available for law enforcement training classes. Resolve student or instructor behavior problems.
Evaluate instructor performance. Identify and schedule adjunct instructors for Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training and continuing education courses. Meet with instructors to review and insure the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) curriculum is followed as mandated when appropriate. Monitor instructors during instruction. Assure CJSTC goals and objectives are adequately and appropriately taught and that instructor credentials are properly documented when appropriate. Assure instructors demonstrate acceptable personal conduct as well as content expertise. Assure instructors model professional interpersonal behaviors. Provide feedback and positive reinforcement to instructors to enhance overall individual instructor competence.
Manage the administrative requirements associated with training and education. Assure applicants for Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training classes submit required college and academy registration documentation in a timely manner. Assure tuition and fees are collected and properly routed to college authorities in accordance with college policies. Assist students in obtaining academic credit for appropriate courses of study. Establish and maintain course and student files according to academy and CJSTC requirements. Revise and update the curriculum as necessary. Identify budget needs and prepare budget information as requested for law enforcement training programs. Coordinate graduation exercises for all basic recruit classes to include design and production of the program, announcements, and awards, as well as coordinating invitations and guest speakers.
Evaluate learner performance. Monitor the performance of learners during classroom instruction and during instructional settings requiring the demonstration of skills proficiency. Provide prompt, timely, and specific feedback to students regarding their performance. Administer end-of-block exams and course exams during basic recruit training. Assure test items used on all exams meet defacto professional standards for the recall and/or understanding and application of instructional objectives. Counsel prospective and current students interested in careers in criminal justice regarding the profession. Remediate learner performance when appropriate. Oversee and administer, with the Training Center Director, all disciplinary actions regarding students. Consult with appropriate staff from sponsoring agencies/departments on disciplinary actions. Initiate dismissal recommendations to the Training Center Director.
Establish and maintain professional credibility. Demonstrate content expertise. Model professional interpersonal behaviors in contacts with students and with criminal justice agencies/departments and their respective training officers. Teach as required and in the event adjunct instructors are not available. Effectively use a variety of instructional methods and media to enhance learning.
MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: An Associate’s degree and ten years’ experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer. The bachelor’s degree is preferred and may substitute for two years of the required experience.
