Associates are also responsible for providing impeccable customer service and animal care, supporting volunteers, and maintaining the shelter environment. This position includes facilitating the animal adoption process by matching potential adopters with the best possible new companion; imparting accurate information; maintaining a safe and healthy environment; processing sales transactions; and keeping precise records. (P) - Essential Duties and Functions: Animal Care - Follow established cleaning and disease prevention protocols to clean, disinfect and maintain shelter condos, kennels, cages, and general areas - Provide a comfortable environment and bedding for the animals with daily monitoring of enrichment items and activities - Monitor and track the health and behavior of the animals and immediately report abnormalities, progress or needs - Feed and monitor cat and dog diets as directed - Administer medicines as prescribed - Ensure all shelter animals are properly housed and cared for within the guidelines of the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, and that positive reinforcement training methods are employed - Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate low stress handling and placement of animals - Integrate and mentor volunteers to assist in direct animal care - Assist with the transport of animals to and from the Mission and Fillmore campuses in Society vehicles, as scheduled (STRONG) People Care - Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while promoting the Societys mission and services - Welcome clients to the adoption center, facilitate client/animal interactions, provide information about our shelter residents, and facilitate the adoption process - Interpret medical evaluations and behavioral assessments of dogs and cats to facilitate suitable matches for the client and the animal - Counsel clients on medical, environmental, and behavioral needs of animals - Promote and facilitate enrollment in positive reinforcement dog training classes - Promote use of our Fillmore or Mission campus veterinary hospitals - Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals - Work cooperatively with all volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment they bring to the organization - Actively promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate; accept and acknowledge monetary and in-kind donations - Maintain knowledge of Society programs, services, and special events - Always treat people with respect, contribute to effective teamwork, and practice direct communication - Participate in staff meetings to review goals and procedures, discuss workplace issues, share ideas, and celebrate successes - Practice discretion with sensitive information regarding clients, volunteers, employees, and our animals - Respond to emails and phone calls promptly and courteously - Perform other duties as assigned (P) Record Keeping - Complete necessary forms and data entry to process adoption of animals - Complete timely and accurate computer data entry tasks, ensure data integrity, using both paper and computer based filing systems - Create and maintain necessary animal records, perform data entry (P) Financial Responsibility - Responsible for incoming monies and accurate handling of receipts and charge processing - When scheduled to do so, responsible for closing and balancing cash drawer and completing deposits - Identify and share ideas to reduce costs and improve the shelters operating efficiency (P) Facility Care - Ensure safety, sanitization, organization and upkeep of the public areas, work spaces, animal areas, and storage areas. Make sure our spaces are free from debris, donations, deliveries, and obstacles. - Represent the organization in a positive manner by professional personal appearance and hygiene - Restock cleaning, animal care, and office supplies and report supply needs - Sort and facilitate the use of in-kind donations. (EM) Safety: - Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines, including IIPP, and modeling safe work practice - Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk - Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols. Participate in keeping the SF SPCA campus clean and well maintained. - (LI) (P) Diversity and Inclusiveness - Work effectively with individuals and colleagues from diverse communities and cultures (P) - Physical Requirements and Work Environment: (STRONG) - Work is performed in a kennel/shelter setting and outdoors - Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking, standing, and walking dogs 8-10 hours per day while performing job functions - Driving, including the transport of animals - Exposure to disinfectant solutions when cleaning

    • Exposure to various weather conditions when working outdoors - Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament. No fear of animals - Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations - Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations are required or must be waived - Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alterations available - Reporting Relationships and Contacts: (STRONG) - Reports to Adoption Manager - Mentors and monitors volunteers (P) (P) - (H2) - Required Qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent - CA Drivers License and insurable driving record preferred - Client service experience - Prepared to work a very physically and socially demanding job - Comfortable handling dogs/cats of all sizes and breeds - Available to work weekends, evenings, holiday shifts, and overtime as needed (P) - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA - Be highly motivated, flexible, patient, and service-oriented while maintaining a professional manner with the public at all times - Act as a team player, able to handle several tasks at once while maintaining poise and a courteous demeanor - Compassion for animals, comfortable working in a shelter environment, and willing to accommodate animals in the work place - Strong animal handling experience in an animal shelter, veterinary office, training, or boarding facility preferred, with understanding of body language and behavior - Interest in learning behavior modification and assessment techniques - Knowledge of animal welfare and cat/dog health issues - Knowledge of animal breeds helpful - Computer skills in a Windows environment required - Attention to detail is a must - Compassion for people with a willingness to work with the needs of diverse clientele in the placement of our animals - Benefits - Salary and Benefits: The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience.
