    The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. Under the auspices of the NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Catalyst, and the NEJM Journal Watch family of specialty publications, and through our education products for health care professionals: NEJM Knowledge+, NEJM Resident 360, and our accredited and comprehensive continuing medical education programs.

    We are currently seeking an Editorial Operations Manager to work in our Boston, MA office.

     

    The Editorial Operations Manager assists the Director of Editorial Operations in maintaining workflow and production schedule of NEJM Editorial Office. She or he will supervise members of the Editorial Operations group and perform a variety of managerial and administrative duties that are essential to the effective and efficient operation of the Editorial Office. The Editorial Operations Manager evaluates workflow to assure operational efficiency is maintained.

     

    Responsibilities:

    1. Serves as direct manager of Editorial Coordinators, Editorial Assistants, Manuscript Assistant, and Executive Assistant to EIC in the Editorial Operations department. Directs their day-to-day work while providing feedback and oversight.

    2. Participates in higher-level planning and strategy work with Director and other managers in the department.

    3. In conjunction with the Director, works to develop workflows and responsibilities that are shared across multiple roles in the department to create better distribution of tasks, sharing of expertise, and a more resilient department.

    4. Oversees the day-to-day workflow for accepted manuscripts, both by completing the accept process personally and by overseeing other members of the team working in this capacity.

    5. Coordinates with NEJM production departments to ensure that accepted manuscripts are passed through in clean, workable fashion.

    6. Works with NEJM senior editorial staff to understand the needs of editors, statisticians, and other stakeholders to better guide Editorial Operations group in its work. Serves as a point of connection for the group and helps to share department expertise and policies between the groups.

    7. Participates in hiring and onboarding process for new staff in the Editorial Operations department.

    8. Creates detailed training and resource guides to better document existing Editorial Operations workflow and leads projects to evaluate, revamp, and add or remove steps to establish clearer benchmarks and overall best practices within team.

    9. Provides support to editors and sections of NEJM as needed.

    10. Assumes selected duties and responsibilities of the Director in Director's absence.

    11. Takes on other projects within the department as needed.

    12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • A Bachelor's degree and several years of academic publishing experience are required.
    • Previous supervisory experience is a plus.
    • Must have strong interpersonal as well as oral and written communication skills.
    • A knowledge of computer software systems is essential; knowledge of ScholarOne is an advantage.
    • Must possess a high degree of intelligence, maturity, poise, sensitivity, and discretion as well as the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
