MACHINE LEARNING/QUANTUM CHEMISTRY INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Experiential Interns.
The Discovery Platform Technologies group has an exciting opportunity for a motivated intern to join the Advanced Chemistry Technologies (ACT) team at AbbVie. The intern will work at an intersection of machine learning and quantum chemistry to develop machine learning models for predicting quantum chemical descriptors for drug-like small molecules. Since quantum chemical calculations can be slow and expensive, using a predictive model instead has the potential to accelerate several drug discovery workflows across the company.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Understand and adopt existing codebases
Train machine learning models on external and internal datasets and benchmark the results
Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientific standards and adhering to best practices in machine learning research
Maintain thorough experimental records, preferably using a git-based workflow
Summarize and present project updates regularly at team-level and department-level meetings
Lead preparation of scientific manuscript for publication of project findings in a peer-reviewed journal
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in a university, pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, Pharm D or PhD in Computer Science, Computational Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Cheminformatics, Materials Science, or other scientific area with a computational emphasis
Must be enrolled in university during the internship period
Completed at least two years of undergraduate study prior to the start of the internship
Experience in one or more higher level programming languages such as Python, R, etc.
Experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, etc.
Strong technical writing skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Track record of applying machine learning algorithms to solve chemistry questions
Demonstrated scientific initiative and creativity in research or development activities
Demonstrated ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise
BENEFITS AND AMENITIES
