COMPANY NETWORK - CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS INTERN (IN BOSTON OFFICE) The Company Network team engages with the 50+ members of the Ceres Company Network to help them develop sustainable business strategies that address key challenges such as climate change, water scarcity and pollution, and human rights abuses throughout the value chain. Ceres' advocacy is rooted in the expectations for corporate sustainability outlined in The 21st Century Corporation: The Ceres Roadmap for Sustainability. These expectations address four critical dimensions of a company's approach to sustainability: governance, stakeholder engagement, disclosure, and performance as it relates to company operations, supply chains and products. The Company Network seeks an intern who will support our corporate engagement work by: - Using publicly available information to research and analyze the sustainability performance of individual companies and sectors through the lens of the Ceres Roadmap expectations; - Providing in-depth research support for ad hoc projects on key topics such as the link between sustainability performance and executive compensation, sustainable supply chains, or modes of stakeholder engagement; - Researching, compiling and presenting industry trends and leading practices for use by team members when engaging with company members and companies outside the membership network; - Developing research briefs for potential member companies, including analyzing performance against the Ceres Roadmap expectations and identifying opportunities for engagement. We are looking for candidates with solid research skills (preferably with experience reviewing corporate sustainability performance), an ability to work independently, excellent verbal and written communication skills and familiarity with key environmental and social sustainability issues that influence, and are influenced by, the private sector. Graduate students preferred, but all will be considered. INVESTOR NETWORK INTERN (IN BOSTON OFFICE) The Ceres Investor Network includes over 170 institutional investors, managing more than $26 trillion in assets, advancing leading investment practices, corporate engagement strategies, and key policy and regulatory solutions. The Investor Network includes nine working groups, including the Shareholder Initiative on Climate and Sustainability (SICS), which supports and coordinates investors and staff working on corporate engagement on a range of topics. This internship will be housed within the SICS working group, and will support projects and activities both within that working group, and within the broader investor network. - Primary responsibilities involve research, writing, and, at times, interacting with the investment community. The Ceres Investor Network on Climate Risk and Sustainability includes the largest public pension funds in the U.S., socially responsible/ESG investment funds, and the nation's leading social, religious and labor shareholder activists. We help these investors use their voice as owners of company stock to encourage companies to reduce risks and seize opportunities related to key environmental issues. - Examples of other projects may include: - Drafting short updates of relevant current affairs to our members, to be shared on our members-only Investor Portal. - Researching investment products offered by Network members. - Conducting landscape analyses to explore the use of ESG criteria in investment processes. - Conducting company-specific research to support investor engagements. We are looking for candidates with: strong research and writing skills; basic familiarity with Google Sheets or Excel; the ability to creatively solve problems and take initiative; and awareness of environmental issues faced by corporations. WATER INTERN (IN BOSTON OFFICE) Ceres is working with companies, investors, water providers, policymakers, environmental organizations and other stakeholders to improve water management and increase reporting on water issues that pose risks to businesses, communities and the environment. The Water Program is seeking an intern this fall to help us advance our work on analyzing and addressing water risks related to two pillars: the food and beverage sector and the investment community. Program areas of work include: - Providing support to the Agriculture and Water Risk initiative, with a focus on the launch and rollout of Feeding Ourselves Thirsty and related shareholder engagements with food and beverage companies. This includes conducting research and analysis on food and beverage companies, supporting the team with tracking news flow and pulling examples of risk, building out PowerPoints for external presentations, creating basic infographics, creating short research briefs and memos, and doing company and investor research on the Bloomberg terminal. - Support the Investor Water Stewardship initiative by tracking newsflow and earnings impacts related to water (storm events, water management, etc), producing a synthesis of findings to be distributed to Investor Water Hub members, support tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) on maturity of water expertise and integration among investors, and working with institutional investors and entrepreneurs to populate a water solutions database. - Other general water-related research and logistical support to support the Water Program, such as updating relevant sections of the Investor Water Toolkit and conducting research on new areas of overlap with water risk and opportunities in other industries including apparel and more. Desired Background: - Strong communication skills and experience with social media strategies a plus (but not required). - Interest and experience in agriculture, water, sustainability and/or responsible investing desired. - Self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. - Familiarity with Bloomberg, Salesforce and G-Suite a plus. For more information, see Ceres' Water Program: https://www.ceres.org/our-work/water TRANSPORTATION INTERN (IN BOSTON OFFICE) The Ceres Transportation Team intern will work directly with both the Senior Director of Transportation and the Senior Manager of Clean Vehicles at Ceres. A clean and efficient transportation system is critical to a strong U.S. economy, with benefits including saving consumers and businesses money as well as reducing our dependence on oil. Transportation is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) and other criteria air pollutant emissions. In fact, in 2016, the transportation sector surpassed the electric power sector as the largest emitter of GHG emissions in the United States, accounting for 28% of GHG emissions - more emissions than any other nation's entire economy, with the exception of China. To reduce harmful emissions coming out of the U.S. transportation sector and improve air quality and human health, we must focus on three components: vehicles, fuels and infrastructure. In 2019, the Ceres Transportation Program's primary focus is to: - Advocate for clean transportation policies, including clean vehicle and fuels policies, - Accelerate corporate uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) and associated EV infrastructure; and - Encourage market growth of EVs and infrastructure. Fall 2019 internship projects will include advocating for Low Carbon Fuel Standards, supporting strong passenger vehicle and truck fuel economy standards, and promoting low- to zero-emission vehicles. In addition, this position will support the development and maintenance of EV market tracking systems and assist with preparation of materials for corporate engagements on transportation electrification. This intern will be asked to perform research on various transportation issues, draft supporting resources and perform some administrative tasks. Please refer to the Ceres Transportation Initiative page for additional information. Graduate students preferred, but all will be considered. The companies include 100 'systemically important emitters', accounting for two-thirds of annual global industrial emissions, alongside more than 60 others with significant opportunity to drive the clean energy transition. Ceres helps drive this initiative by supporting investors in collaborative shareholder engagements and improvements in their stewardship practices. Working with members of Ceres' Investor Network team based in San Francisco, this intern will help advance our work by conducting research on climate risk in various sectors and collecting information on company and investor actions in order to curate an informational webinar series for CA100+ signatories.
