SPECTRUM NEWS IS OFFERING A 5 MONTH PAID FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM FOR SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS!

This fellowship program is a five-month rotational program that focuses on three core areas of journalism – Multimedia Journalism, Digital Journalism, and Producing. Fellows will be trained, mentored, and guided by newsroom leaders in a state-of-the-art, 24-hours news environment. Fellows will receive hands-on, professional experience and the opportunity to build a strong foundation for their career in journalism.

Throughout the course of the five-month rotation, fellows will spend time studying under Spectrum Networks journalists. Across all three tracks, you will meet with a dedicated mentor each week to talk about your progress and receive feedback on your work:

    MMJ TRACK

All Spectrum Networks journalists are multimedia storytellers, finding and reporting stories important to the local communities we serve. In this track, you will be trained as an MMJ with the goal of turning at least one to two stories that will air on Spectrum News 1 across markets in upstate New York. These stories will be yours to use for your resume reel.

During the Fellowship, you will learn how to use advanced video and audio equipment, as well as be trained on how to report, edit, and produce your own stories. You will also work with our veteran MMJs to see how a professional reporter does their job. In addition, you will learn how to research story ideas and pitch those ideas to managers.

    DIGITAL PRODUCER TRACK

Spectrum Networks mobile news apps reach over 21 million customers and help our audience connect with local news and weather on-the-go. In this digital producer track, you will be trained with the goal of producing one to two original digital stories to use for your resume wheel, in addition to working through a breaking news situation. From writing and editing, to creating and posting content specifically for social media, you will learn how to handle all aspects of breaking news and digital content creation. You will learn how to use our content management system and other programs, how to properly organize and prioritize an app and website home page, and more. You will also be trained in copywriting and the AP Style of editing.

    PRODUCER TRACK

While producers work behind-the-scenes, they are some of the most powerful storytellers at Spectrum Networks, crafting newscasts that shape the audience experience. In this track, you will be trained as a producer with the goal of producing a half hour newscast. This newscast will be yours to use for your resume reel. In addition to learning how to us Dalet, our news production operating system, you will learn how to stack and time a newscast so it flows and creates a compelling narrative for the audience to follow. You will also learn how to edit video and create graphics for newscasts. By working with Spectrum News 1 producers on your copywriting, you will become experienced in crafting teases, scripts, and other written newscast elements.

    JOIN OUR TEAM!

Our objective is to recruit and develop the next generation of talented journalists through training, mentorship, and hands-on professional experience. Although being accepted to the fellowship program does not guarantee full-time employment, we would like to place fellows in full-time roles when possible.
