As part of Medical Affairs, the Senior Medical Director serves as a key departmental leader who will effectively plan and engage core departmental efforts, through scientific evidence generation and scientific information exchange with key internal and external stakeholders The Sr. Medical Director will support the development and execution of the most efficient and integrated medical/scientific strategy. As a physician, this role’s leadership includes the application of clinical knowledge and training that can foster elevation of medical affairs functionality to a higher level. This role will lead the department’s peer-to-peer engagements with external key medical experts and be responsible for the management of the medical affairs HQ team that coordinates and plans engagements with highest priority senior medical experts.
Required Skills
- Department leader responsible for planning, managing and executing engagements with high priority key medical experts.
- Through external engagement, provide and consolidate relevant data evidence to ensure that the strategy is clearly defined and consistent with relevant business objectives.
- Key departmental leader overseeing and contributing to execution complex medical expert engagements, including Advisory Boards, Think Tanks, and Steering Committees.
- Build and nurture relationships with external stakeholders in the therapeutic area landscape.
- Ensure that HQ medical engagement planning and execution is informed by field medical MSL engagement and vice versa.
- Subject matter expert resource within medical affairs and throughout Akebia.
- Support medical publications as a strategic resource, contributor, author, and/or presenter.
- Consultative resource for internal pre-review of medical materials, including medical information response documents, field medical materials, etc.
- Foster greater clinical knowledge in the field medical organization through hands-on mentoring and team trainings.
- Contribute to development/adaptation of medical materials (e.g. presentations, trainings, medical briefs and talking points).
- Serve as a physician subject matter expert within Akebia, as needed (e.g. ad hoc review of promotional materials).
Required Experience
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Medical Doctor (M.D.), or non-US equivalent of M.D.
- Completion of a residency program strongly preferred
- Completion of a subspecialty fellowship is desirable
- Experience in Nephrology, Cardiology, and/or Hematology desirable but not required
- Board-certified and licensed physician with at least 2 years of licensed US-clinical experience
- 5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, preferably within Medical Affairs or Clinical Research
- Experience as a direct manager
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completed residency in Nephrology or at least 2-years experience working in the nephrology disease state area
- Comprehensive management experience
- Ability to serve as both a presenter and moderator of advisory boards
- Experience in developing and executing medical advisory boards
- Experience interpreting clinical trial findings
- Experience supporting development of medical plans
- Comfortable as a hands-on leader
- Collaborative and humble mindset, that does not over-value differences in professional education
