Media Relations Coordinator - External Relations

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The Media Relations Coordinator is a key position that helps execute the Center’s traditional media outreach efforts as part of the Office of External Relations. This position will work closely with the Chief Communications Officer, Vice President of Communications, and other External Relations staff to provide high-level media relations and communications support to programs and the Center around programmatic work and events, as well as around timely responses to issues driving the news cycle.
The salary band for this position is $55,000-$62,000. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Serve as primary point of contact for journalists seeking expert insights on issues driving the news cycle and match CSIS experts with journalists for interviews;
• Proactively pitch CSIS work and experts to media, including writing and distributing media advisories; event promotion; and tailored outreach to individual journalists and media outlets;
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with key members of the media;
• Provide strategic counsel to programs and experts around media engagement;
• Schedule/organize media hits in CSIS broadcast studio, coordinate visiting media crews, and execute set-up in coordination with the audio/visual team;
• Oversee press metrics using Meltwater; track and log press hits on website;
• Maintain and build press lists using Muck Rack;
• Organize, manage logistics of, and moderate press briefings;
• Write and produce a wide variety of communications content, including press releases and other marketing and promotion materials;
• Other duties and projects as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field;
• 1-2 years of relevant professional experience;
• Deep understanding of the media environment, with a particular emphasis on Beltway media;
• Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to prioritize, track, and accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic and very fast-paced environment;
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and in a team with a range of individuals at all levels of the Center;
• Strong communications and writing skills, including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from a wider variety of partners and constituents;
• Ability to work outside of traditional business hours (including nights and weekends) when key CSIS issues are in the news cycle;
• Strong professional judgement, maturity, and discretion.
