Department Summary The Enhanced Infrastructure Replacement Program (EIRP) workforce is responsible for gas main replacement/installation projects that help improve our ability to provide safe, reliable natural gas service in communities we serve. This Field Leader position supervises full-time employees who are managed seasonally and covered under the Consumers Energy working agreement with the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA). Field Leaders and employees can report to three headquarters: Birch Run in the northeast, Wixom in the southeast, and Bellevue in the southwest. This is a seasonal position subject to a layoff period typically 2 to 4 weeks in duration during the winter season. Job Description/Responsibilities The EIRP Field Leader is responsible for the safe and efficient execution of field work focusing on the installation and replacement of gas distribution facilities statewide. As such, background knowledge and previous experience in underground construction (gas, electric, water, sewer etc.) is beneficial to effectively lead a team of gas lines construction workers. Key responsibilities include: -Provide direct supervision to 5-15 union employees, including the accountability for safe working procedures, compliance with regulations, and engagement of the team. -Support work disciplines including plastic and steel pipe construction and retirement, directional drilling pipe installation, and soft and hard surface property restoration (lawn and pavement). -Train and provide technical expertise to gas distribution field employees. -Positively and frequently interact with customers. -Direct work activities to meet established work plans and objectives. -Lead and collaborate with peers, employees and partnering organizations to create/maintain a work environment that reaches common goals of safety, compliance, quality, and productivity. Requirements/Qualifications -A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. -Technical knowledge in Gas transmission, distribution, and metering or Gas compression and storage gained either through a technical field of study and/or through related work experience. -Valid drivers license. The following experience and skills may set you apart from other applicants: -3+ years of underground utility construction experience (i.e. gas, electric, water, sewer). -Post-high school education / degree in Business Administration, Construction Management or similar. -Leadership experience with both projects and team performance. -Proficiency with standard business computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Essential Functions The Field Leader is a responsible for leading employees in the safe and efficient execution of work of assigned underground construction activities. Responsible for the planning, organizing, coordinating, evaluating and supervising the work of employees assigned to the operation and construction of gas systems, customer gas services, buildings and grounds or utility support areas. Responds to complaints and requests for information on the status of jobs in progress to a high degree of accuracy. Inspects job sites to check on work progress, assure satisfactory completion and plans new assignments, prepares requisitions for operations and maintenance supplies, equipment and materials and supervises special projects as required. Conducts regular safety meetings, participates as a member of safety committee; investigates and completes necessary incident reports and accident reports; maintains records, prepares and submits required reports for appropriate agencies. Hours and Travel This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 45 hours per week with a majority of the time spent in the field with the remainder in the office. Individual needs to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with emergent system restoration activities and could be given very short notice to do so. Individual should be willing to participate in the on call rotation in case of potential emergent activities. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters, which may require overnight stays. Could potentially work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the business, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime. Individual must have a valid drivers license.
