    Job Description

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    As a Lower School Student Success Counselor responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Provide social/emotional and academic support to students who display one or more behaviors: * Failures in multiple classes * Current/History of legal involvement * Suspicion of gang participation * Multiple Out School Suspensions or behavioral issues in school * Teen Dating Violence * Ongoing truancy (+10 days) * Negative attention seeking behavioral patterns

    • Academic Guidance: * Via PowerSchool reports monitor your caseload’s grades and academic progress. * Identify and support students who are in danger of repeating their grade, and communicate with parents on students’ progress towards graduation. * Review credits and graduation progress with students who are in summer school. * Identify and communicate with alternative high schools and programs to link students who have expressed a desire to transfer.

    • Counseling and Career Guidance Support - The goal is for our at-risk students to be engaged at KIPP NYC College Prep as a functioning student advancing toward HS graduation. The Lower School Student Success Counselor will have a reduced caseload concentrating on the neediest 5% of our student population where the Lower School Student Success Counselor will have either a primary role in intervention services or support another counselor or social worker in their work with an at-risk student and their family. Additional external services from other social service agencies will be sought out when deemed appropriate.

    • Alternative High School, GED, or Trade School Options - When applicable and by choice of the student and family, the Transitional Counselor will support in helping students find alternative high school, GED, or trade school (ie Job Corps) options. Referrals will be made to programs that best fit the needs of the student.

    • Home Visits - The Student Success Counselor will conduct home visits as needed with students and families. Home visits will be approved by the Director of Counseling and will always include at least two staff members to conduct the visit together.

    • Advocacy - Students who are at risk or involved with legal concerns will meet with the counselor weekly to provide updates. The Student Success Counselor will also act as an advocate or a liaison to outside parties that require updates about the student.

    • Partnerships - In partnership with the Upper School SSC, the Lower School SSC will research, build and maintain partnerships with transitional schools, post-secondary programs and community based organizations that can provide certifications and additional opportunities for students. ****

    • Record Keeping - Update DeansList and SESIS (for mandated students) contact notes documenting student counseling sessions and counseling cases and notes for more sensitive information through DeansList and Powerschool as necessary. Keep your own confidential electronic notes or paper files securely in a password protected document or in a locked filing cabinet.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Masters in Social Work or School Counseling
    • Three to five years of experience working with high school students
    • Experience working with at-risk youth preferred
    • Patience, zest, grit, self-control, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude, and a sense of humor
    • A passion for being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture
    • Documented track record of personal and professional success
    • Extensive knowledge of adolescent development

    Additional Information

    KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $70,829 - $136,704 per year. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role, NYS initial or professional certification, and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP NYC will evaluate a candidate’s years of experience, certification, and longevity at point of hire to determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale.
