Friends of the Children Austin breaks the cycle of generational poverty. Our model is to achieve this goal through intentional relationships. We are a prevention/early intervention program working to enable our community’s highest-risk children to develop the relationships, goals, and skills necessary to break the cycles of violence, poverty, and abuse. Our evidence-based model is courageous, unique and proven. We provide each child with a salaried, professional mentor, who we call a Friend, from kindergarten through graduation – 12.5 years. No matter what. Friends spend a minimum of four hours every week with each of their eight children, teaching valuable life skills, instilling positive behaviors and helping them grow into responsible adults.
The past few years have been challenging for Texas Schools. As a result of these challenges, our children have academically regressed so that currently more than 50% are not on grade level. Our Summer Literacy Book Camp will ensure our most behind elementary schoolers (grades Pre-K- 6 -5) receive instruction at least one day per week. Each Literacy Tutor will work 1:1 in 60-minute sessions with each child in order to meet individual reading improvement goals. This is where you come in! Mentors will transport children to the Clubhouse, so that Literacy Tutors can concentrate on tutoring. Ideally, Literacy Tutors will share progress updates and focus practice areas each week with Mentors we call them “Friends”, who will share that information with Caregivers. Literacy team members will set positive expectations, nurture and promote strengths, talents, and abilities; help assure physical and emotional well-being; teach developmentally appropriate literacy skills; and model responsible behavior. A tutor must also know, understand, honor, and support the organization’s mission, vision, values, principles, and policies.
