We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Accounting Specialist to join our credit union. This role involves a variety of accounting responsibilities, including managing financial transactions, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations. The ideal candidate is adaptable, efficient, and has a passion for delivering accurate financial results to support the success of our credit union.
Key Responsibilities :
1. General Ledger Management :
- Record, reconcile, and maintain general ledger accounts accurately and in a timely manner.
- Prepare and post journal entries for various financial activities, including adjustments and accruals.
2. Accounts Payable and Receivable :
- Process invoices and payments, ensuring compliance with internal policies.
- Monitor receivables, record member payments, and follow up on outstanding balances.
- Reconcile accounts payable and receivable ledgers.
3. Reconciliation and Reporting :
- Reconcile bank accounts, loan accounts, and investment accounts.
- Assist accounting firm prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
- Generate reports on budget performance, variances, and financial trends for management review.
4. Regulatory Compliance :
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including NCUA (National Credit Union Administration) guidelines.
- Assist with preparing documentation and reports for audits and examinations.
- Stay updated on relevant accounting standards and regulatory changes.
5. Budgeting and Forecasting :
- Assist in the development and monitoring of the credit union’s annual budget.
- Provide analysis and recommendations for improving financial performance and cost efficiency.
6. Internal Controls :
- Monitor and enhance internal accounting controls to safeguard the credit union's assets.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve operational efficiency.
7. Collaboration and Support :
- Work closely with other departments to address financial needs and provide accounting expertise.
- Assist with payroll processing and benefits administration as needed.
- Perform additional tasks or projects as assigned by management.
Qualifications and Skills :
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2–3 years of accounting experience, preferably within a credit union, bank, or financial institution.
- Familiarity with credit union accounting systems and regulatory requirements is a plus.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Fiserv, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
- Soft Skills:
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration across teams.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
- Office-based role with occasional overtime during month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closings or audits.
- As part of a small team, the role may involve cross-functional tasks or support to other departments when needed.
-Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds, such as files or office supplies.
