ANIMAL CARE SUPERVISOR

Job Classification

Primary Function

Serves as a key operational leader and working supervisor of caregivers and team leaders within the husbandry department. Responsible for the daily care and well-being of retired chimpanzees within assigned Phase of the sanctuary, and the prevention of disease through the close observation of chimpanzee behavior and adherence to cleaning protocols and safety measures.

Duties and Responsibilities

ANIMAL CARE

· Assist with morning cleaning and sanitizing chimpanzee housing areas, equipment, and other related areas or materials using cleaning equipment.

· Remove and replace bedding as needed or when short staffed.

· Observe chimpanzee behavior and appearance. Report unusual behavior or injuries.

· Participate in positive reinforcement training program and observations; ensure staff compliance with enrichment and training objectives.

· Inspect all housing areas and bedding. Report any structural issues to maintenance for repair.

· Transport food, bedding, or supplies from storage areas to animal areas.

· Prepare and provide food to the chimpanzees.

· Maintain health, behavior, and cleaning records.

· Maintain logs of staff training, group moves, group locations, and sanitizing schedules.

· Create weekly plan/schedule of cleaning to be performed.

· Organize timeline or schedule and coordinate with all other departments to enable them to achieve their tasks.

· Provide enrichment and training to chimpanzees as directed.

· Administer medications and treatment as directed by veterinarian.

· Assist behavioral or veterinary staff as requested.

MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISORY

· Model organizational values.

· Recruit, hire and train animal caregivers and interns on primary responsibilities; supervise volunteers assigned to the husbandry department.

· Provide direction and supervise daily work of caregivers and team leaders including night staff.

· Manage performance management process for assigned staff; complete SMART goals and performance reviews for direct reports holding employees accountable and supporting them in their achievement of personal and professional goals.

· Partner with Director of People & Culture as needed for employees on performance improvement plans, and for disciplinary action, including termination.

· Develop and maintain training schedule for new hires and other departments on lock checking.

· Train and encourage team members on observing chimpanzee behavior and appearance, reporting unusual behavior or injuries.

· Partner with animal care manager to develop work schedules.

· Work collaboratively with other animal care departments to ensure successful and safe outcomes during shifting, sedations, and chimpanzee introductions.

· Hold team members accountable for complying with proper locking protocols and other safety procedures.

· Assist with monitoring supplies and maintaining stock of feed, bedding, and cleaning supplies as needed.

· Ensure husbandry Phase is inspection-ready at all times; assist with preparation for regulatory accreditation visits.

· Support public outreach by participating in Chimpanzee Discovery Day, donor tours, and other development activities.

Education and Experience Required

· Associates degree in related field, veterinary technician degree, or AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification required.

· Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.

· At least 8 years’ experience working with animals, including 6 years working with non-human primates, and 3 years working with chimpanzees required.

· A combination of 10 years’ related education and non-human primate/chimpanzee experience can be substituted for education/experience requirements.

· Three years’ experience in supervisory role at an animal facility is required.

· Must possess working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures in the animal care field.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

· Works well across departments to accomplish organizational priorities and goals.

Other Requirements and Working Conditions

· This work will require bending, carrying, kneeling, lifting, listening, pulling, pushing, reading, speaking, squatting, standing, stooping, stretching, walking, watching, and writing.

· Must be able to routinely lift and carry 50lbs for short distances.

· Must be able to assist in lifting chimpanzees (up to 75lbs).

· Duties require driving Chimp Haven vehicles and must have a valid driver’s license and meet Chimp Haven’s motor vehicle operating standards.

· Work may involve considerable outdoor work in various weather conditions.

· Potential exists for animal bites and scratches.

· Potential exposure to unpleasant odors, animal wastes, animal tissues and body fluids, toxic chemicals, zoonotic diseases (tuberculosis, shigella, etc.) infectious agents (Hepatitis B, C, HIV, etc.)

· Weekend, holiday, and night work may be necessary. Responsible for check-ins with care staff on weekends, holidays, and nights.

· Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program that includes hepatitis B and other inoculations is required.

· Safety training, equipment, clothing, and supplies will be provided.
