    Job Description

    The Archaeologist will oversee Phase I, II, and III archaeological field efforts, manage a crew of archaeological field technicians, and travel for archaeological monitoring projects. The Archaeologist will have knowledge of basic field excavation techniques, the ability to identify Precontact and Historical artifacts, understand site and feature formation processes, be able to properly fill out and quality check field and laboratory forms, and be able to draw accurate profiles and plan views, and be able to direct others in these efforts. They will oversee and perform excavation of STPs, test units, and features, as well as mapping and documentation. The Archaeologist is expected to be able to keep field journals and write up field results, including contributing to technical reports. AECOM values Health and Safety and the Field Supervisor must prioritize Health and Safety protocols.

    The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Assist in scoping of archaeological projects and utilize GIS, site records, and other data to identify locations where sites can occur.
    • Keep records and maintain the relevant State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) documentation pertaining to the cultural resources
    • Provides regulatory compliance support for Federal, state, municipal and commercial clients
    • Serves as Field Director and has experience in directing field crews under the guidance of the Principal Investigator including scheduling work and making individual or team assignments and leading the instruction of others in use of equipment, technology, and field methods. May have the ability to serve as Principal Investigator, based on level of experience and project complexity.
    • Works independently as an archaeological monitor on construction sites. Can properly document any relevant cultural features thoroughly without assistance.
    • Travels for potentially long periods of time across the continental United States.
    • Supports all phases of archaeological investigation and regulatory compliance.
    • Collects information and makes judgements through observation, interviews, and the review of documents.
    • Writes archaeological reports and prepares archaeological site forms and makes decisions about project alternatives, NRHP evaluation, and effects on historic properties in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
    • Works with the technical field, lab, and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet AECOM quality standards.
    • Performs manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving wheelbarrows filled with dirt.
    • Has the ability to perform bending, kneeing, standing and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. and have the tolerance on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • BA/BS in Anthropology or related field, + 2 years of related experience in archaeological fieldwork and analysis or demonstrated equivalent combination of education.
    • 2 years of related experience in archaeological fieldwork and analysis or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities, and experience.
    • Meets the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
    • Must be willing to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout the United States.
    • Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
    • Due to the nature of work US Citizenship is Required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience (e.g., Archaeological Supervisor/Field Director.
    • Master's Degree
    • Demonstrated experience using GPS units, Total Stations, GIS (e.g., ESRI products), and graphical illustration software (e.g., Adobe).
    • Demonstrated experience writing technical reports and papers.
