    ASBESTOS INSPECTOR-CURRENT LICENSING NEEDED FOR CONSIDERATION

    JOB OPENING in Southern Maine- AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY

    BASIC PURPOSE: Positions in this job are assigned responsibility for the inspection and investigation of asbestos abatement projects for compliance with state and federal rules and regulations, or for the review and audit of operation and maintenance programs that regulate asbestos in buildings.

    TYPICAL FUNCTIONS - The functions within this job include the following: Conducts or assists in performing preparatory initial inspections of abatement projects; conducts follow-up in progress inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations; conducts or assists in final inspections upon completion to ensure all friable asbestos has been removed. Inspects and tests equipment and machinery including carbon monoxide equipment, temporary electrical setups, ventilation systems, plumbing, noise and other conditions affecting employees and public health; collects samples of bulk and dusts to assess potential asbestos hazards. Prepares various reports regarding consultations, inspections, in progress, visual, final and work documentation; reviews closing documents for billing of contractor and to check for violations of regulations. Maintains files and records relating to the asbestos operation; reviews plans for the maintenance, repair and handling of asbestos containing materials; consults with private and public entities regarding maintenance, repair and handling of asbestos containing materials.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES Knowledge of rules for the abatement of friable asbestos; of state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to asbestos removal; of industrial safety and hygiene practices; of the methods, techniques, tools, apparatus and equipment used for asbestos abatement; of national fire protection and electrical codes; and of report writing techniques. Ability is required to detect hazardous situations and recommend corrective action; to operate and maintain asbestos removal equipment and industrial health monitoring equipment; to interpret and apply various regulations relating to asbestos removal; to conduct thorough and accurate inspections; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and to perform strenuous physical activities.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be in current possession of a valid New England asbestos inspector (MA, NH, ME, CT, RI or VT) license.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position; be willing to work hours other than on regular shifts during emergency or high volume situations. Own their own car, carry their own car insurance, and have a good driving record. While performing the duties of this job, the employees are frequently required to stand, walk and reach; and talk and hear. Routinely, employees are required to sit; to manipulate or feel objects, tools or controls; climb (for extended distances) and/or balance; ascend/descend ladders and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Job performance may result in minimal noise exposure, the minimal possibility of chemical exposure and exposure to work environments where chemicals are present. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision with the ability to see defects during an inspection, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to differentiate between colors. Position requires the employee to be able to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment related to inspection type, work outdoors, to deal with all weather extremes, carry tool bags containing tools, handle all tools required to facilitate inspection and, for some specific jobs, be able to carry 25 pounds up to 400 feet and be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
