Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated construction professional to join our team as an Assistant Resident Engineer and play a key role in the successful management and execution of transportation projects in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). As an Assistant Resident Engineer, you will provide critical support to the Resident Engineer in overseeing project activities and ensuring compliance with NCDOT standards for the rebuilding of critical infrastructure.
This will be an in-person role in the NCDOT Division 13 Resident Engineer's Office located in Weaverville, North Carolina.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Oversight:
1. Assist the Resident Engineer in planning, coordinating, and supervising all aspects of transportation projects.
2. Monitor project progress, budgets, and schedules to facilitate timely and efficient completion.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance:
1. Verify that construction activities adhere to NCDOT regulations, guidelines, and contractual obligations.
2. Conduct regular inspections to verify compliance with NCDOT standards, specifications, and contract documents.
3. Monitor and inspect erosion and sediment control devices and activities to remain in compliance with NPDES permit requirements.
- Contract Administration:
1. Assist in the administration of contracts, including drafting, reviewing, and approving supplemental agreements, pay requests, and other contractual documents.
2. Maintain accurate records of contract documents and correspondence.
3. Monitor and track materials testing to confirm compliance with minimum sampling requirements.
4. Lead progress and other coordination meetings and draft meeting minutes.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
1. Foster strong relationships with NCDOT officials, contractors, engineering teams, and other project stakeholders.
2. Serve as a point of contact for project-related communications and inquiries.
- Problem-Solving and Issue Resolution:
1. Collaborate with the Resident Engineer to address project challenges, deviations, and unforeseen issues.
2. Provide recommendations and implement solutions to keep projects on track.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
- 4 years of experience with roadway and bridge construction projects (as an inspector, contractor, or other field-oriented professional)
- Strong knowledge of NCDOT standards, specifications, and regulations
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with NCDOT and contractor personnel and the public
- Proficiency in project management software and tools, including Microsoft Office suite of software
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment
- Effective problem-solving skills and decision-making ability
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of North Carolina, or ability to apply for reciprocity in North Carolina
- Knowledge of NCDOT systems, including HiCAMS, SharePoint, and ProjectWise
- Alternative Delivery Method experience
- NCDOT Materials Testing Certifications including:
- Erosion and Sediment Control, Level II
- ACI/Concrete
- QMS Roadway
- ABC Sampling
- Borrow Pit Sampling
- Conventional Density
