At BMC, the dedicated Material Handler performs a full scope of yard and warehouse responsibilities. They support the needs of their location and create smooth sailing for the team. This reliable team member is responsible for use of hand controlled forklifts and forklift operation, loading and unloading all lumber and building materials, receiving and shipping, picking orders, stocking and counting inventory, monitoring quality of goods and products, and completing all necessary paperwork thoroughly and accurately. This team member also assists in sales-related administrative and customer service activities.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely and efficiently load, unload and build outgoing loads of lumber and building materials into storage facilities, onto semi-trailer trucks and flatbeds, securing all outgoing loads in appropriate and safe stacking method. In some locations, automated loading systems are also utilized.
- Generates a daily list of materials and lumber replenishment, verifying quantities needed and damaged products to Supervisor.
- Organizes orders with Dispatcher; reviewing trailers, trucks and designated loads and maintains a constant, even workflow for Yard/ Warehouse associates.
- Coordinate load pulling and loading ensuring all orders are prepared, loaded for drivers and verified.
- Regularly empties trash receptacles and maintains a clean warehouse and yard.
- Safely operates banding equipment, saws and other necessary facility equipment.
- Ensures staging areas, loading docks and bays are clean and clear of any materials, lumber or obstacles.
- Occasionally provides load delivery assistance upon Location Manager directive when loads are difficult or oversized.
- Receives and organizes all incoming lumber, warehouse products, commodities and materials in a timely and efficient manner completing all verification paperwork, system receipt entries and material distribution into the appropriate bins and storage locations/areas within same business day.
- Participates and supports Inventory and Inventory Control activities, maintaining organized warehouse and yard as well as counting and preparation work for inventories.
- Open communication with all levels regarding location challenges, solutions and business impacts.
- Position splits time between the warehouse and yard; working conditions vary depending on the location and the season.
- Both temperature variations and inclement weather are real aspects of the work environment.
- Must be able to regularly lift up to 100 lbs. with assistance and spend long amounts of time stooping, reaching, bending, climbing, standing or walking.
Required Skills
- Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Trained to operate woodworking machines, saws and tools.
- Lumber and building material product knowledge.
- Basic math skills, accurate with a tape measure, saw and hammer.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Relatively tech-savvy is considered a plus.
Required Experience
Minimum Experience:
- 2 years forklift experience operating a 8K to 20K lb. forklift.
- 6 months warehouse and material handling experience.
- Current Forklift certification required and must maintain certification to retain position.
